6" models began with the 29-2. There are actually fewer 6" 29-2's than there are 6 1/2". The latter are just more sought after because of Mr. Callahan.

And if I'm not mistaken, it's not just the 29s, other N frames went from 6.5" to 6" around that same date.

29-2's with a 6 inch barrel are actually hard to come by. I've only come across one myself in all the years.I bought the one mentioned NIB back in 1984 because it was the old Carbonia finish.Appearence wise the 6.5 is better then the 6inch.For what it's worth my 6 inch models 57,27,629,29-3 always drew from a shoulder rig with a noticeable difference over the longer 6.5 inch barrel. This was one of the main reasons according to the factory back then ,that they brought all models in line to the 6 inch configuration.According to our club treasurer who had retired from Smith & Wesson ,the cost savings was the elimination of the pinned and recessed ,and not the elimination of that half inch.Apparantly the same length bar stock was used to cut both the 6/6.5.

In 1979, S&W decided to stardardize all of their Nframe barrel lengths to either 4, 6 or 8 5/8". Hence the very last 29-2s were made in 6" vs 6.5". When they went to the 29-3 (dropping the pins/recess) the 6" continued.

Prior to '79, the optioned varied by model for no obvious reasoning:
27: 3.5", 5", 6" (also 6.5" earlier), and 8.5/8"
28: 4", 6"
29: 4", 6.5", 8 5/8"
57: 4", 6", 8 5/8"

So I know the pre 29 came in 6 1/2 and the 1,2,3and 10, but did 4 through 9? I'm asking because I'm trying to collect them all in 6 1/2 and really haven't found anywhere that says much about it.

You need a copy of the "Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson" by Supia.

There are some of the very newest models in 6.5", but the classic old 44 Magnums in that tube-length ended with the 29-2 in 1979. The 29-1 will likely be a bit difficult to find.

I bought the standard smith and Wesson catalog on kindle and read about the 29 changing the barrel length from 6 1/2 to 6 in 79 but they don't say when they started again. My 29-10 has a 6 1/2 so I'm lost again

I would just send him a pm since he is a senior member who provides expert commentary among other things here.

Doc's book is only about the very early 44 Magnums. It is an excellent collector's resource, but will not answer any of your questions about the 44 magnums of the past 30 years or so.

Take it from me I looked and looked all over the Internet and was advised by a member here to get the STANDARD CATALOG of S&W ------ Trust me it was the best $25.00 I ever spend!!! It is a college level course in S&W between 2 covers !
