Ok, as usual I am a sucker for any S&W wheel gun. This time I bought a model 64-6. 4" bull barrel like my Model 10-8. Stainless construction. Serial Number CDD24xx (The SCSW says Jan, 1999)

This has a bobbed hammer that looks like factory work but does not have any NY-1 stamps in the yoke/crane.

Smooth trigger face.

So what do I have here?

Awful fitting Hogue grips.

I have, within the last year, bought 2 64-6's with the bobbed hammer. One was a 2 inch out of a shop in Texas and the other was a 4 inch out of a shop in Missouri. Both of these were Brink's trade ins as mentioned by Murphydog above.

I believe they had several different - numbers of the ones that were sold and they were popping up all over the internet at various different places. I believe Brinks has gone over to a semi-auto for their issued guns and were trading these in when they purchased new.

I too have a 64-5 DAO brinks gun that came from Texas. I put in a reduced wolff spring kit and a new strain screw. It is my favorit revolver to shoot.

Ok that would be cool if it's a former Brinks gun.

Other than being a bit dirty and having a sucky grip on it I really like this. It's got a great feeling trigger and the cylinder is not loose etc. A good cleaning and a new set of grips would do wonders for this M64.

One question. I read somewhere that converting this back to a spur hammer and DA/SA action is just a matter of replacing the hammer. While I am not at all inclined to convert it back I am curious if that is how relatively simple it is to revert it to DA/SA. (Yes I understand fitting may be required and would be best done by a competent 'smith)

Congrats on your newest! :)

I have the 2" version and carry it quite a bit.

All that's needed to convert it to DA/SA I a new hammer. And since its MIM, it should drop right in.

You would be surprised how a little work will improve that trigger, MIM or not. We had one revolver with the cylinder stop out of whack and it was a good opportunity to work a little more on the gun.

The DAO from Brinks have no S/A sear on the hammer, so they wouuld need to be replaced for a hammer with the sear and spur. I am perfectly fine with DAO.

Here is what the Brinks' guns look like inside, this is a 64-6, MIM parts and frame mounted fp.

I've carried several such revolvers on duty working Contract Security in the past few decades, some of the guns are SA/DA and some are neutered to DAO. I typically shoot DA anyway, so it matters little which variant I have, I like them all. Triggers tend to be very good in either mode, and if you can see the sights well you can do amazing things with them. J&G Sales and several other outlets have sold truckloads of these guns over the years, and most were carried a lot and shot little, most Rent-A-Cops (I can call them that, because I ARE one) don't shoot much beyond the required qualification duties.

I liked my latest 64 duty gun so much I bought several more, and they are ALL favorites. Shoot it often, give it some love, and it will serve you as well as a loyal puppy.

papajohn,

I have a few M10s and M64/65s that I have secured for myself and my sons. I find them great guns and mine are all law enforcement/security trade-ins.

The two model 10s have been touched up with rust blue. I got them from J&G about three years ago.

Century Arms Intl was selling guns like that a couple of years ago. Theirs were re-imports and had the CAI markings engraved on them - someday I'll find out where mine shipped to first.

How is the trigger on that gun? Mine has the worst trigger I have ever felt - I bet it's 20 pounds. I changed the grips - you can see the engraving on the barrel:

It's a cool gun even with the nasty trigger and if I ever decide to carry it I'll have that trigger fixed.

The 64 with the best trigger was one of the CAI guns, but I hated the horrid rollmark so badly I decided to rebarrel it with a 3" tube just to get rid of it. It was either that, or cut off an inch, recrown, and mount a new front sight. The new barrel was cheaper. That gun is now the Queen of the K-frames I have, and a handsome rascal at that......but I'm queer for 3" revolvers anyway.

This is most of the collection, but there are a few others floating around here somewhere......

Working over the triggers on a K-frame isn't that complicated, but if you're not comfortable doing it yourself there are a lot of competent 'smiths that can do it for a reasonable fee. It's worth it to me, but I have to admit to being spoiled on good triggers.

And a follow-up (if anybody cares! :D)

I've sorted out the ill fitting rubber grips and gave this a good cleaning.

I've been shooting it quite a lot lately and just love the feel of this. Even as it's a DAO shooter I've got myself quite used to knowing how to stage the trigger for that good clean break and dead on shot.

This shoots to POA and is a dream to shoot. It makes me look like a better shooter than I am.

This is one of the best deals I've found on a used Smith.

The product code on the 4-inch DAO pre-lock M64 was 102505. IINM they used the same pc for the -5 and the -6. Possibly others prior to that, I don't know. The same 4-inch gun with a standard action was a 102506. With the -7 came the lock, and all those had new pc's.
