So, just when I can feel my trigger smoothing out the hammer stud/pin/arm whatever it's called snaps off. It's on the way back to S&W but if anyone has any experience with returns I have a few questions. Is that repairable ? If it isn't do they just send a new gun or can I get something else and pay the difference, the reason I ask is I saw that in some threads and really I don't know. I was just getting used to shooting that thing and getting good with it but I dread breaking in a new 642 LOL.

Absolutely. Had the same problem with a 28. Came back slicker than when it went.
It's repairable only by the factory. They won't even release studs to anyone, including gunsmiths. The repair will probably involve a re-blue since the new stud will have to be polished flush with the left cheek.

If they deem it a warranty issue, expect a new gun with a new serial number that will require a new transfer from your ffl.

Thanks for the replies, I won't mind at all having that gun back fixed, from reading it looks like on the 642's they replace the frames, I just hope they put my old worn in parts back, hopefully they call with an update and I can find out what my options are.
Well I've had it out 4-5 times and limit each outing to 50 rounds, so 200-250 rounds and thousands of dry fires, the gun was made in may of 13.
Yeah thats a thread I was talking about, if they say I need a new gun think I'll see about getting a j frame non aluminum or even a 686 2 1/2 inch.

I had a hammer pivot pin break on my 640 Pro (all steel revolver) and a trigger pivot pin break on my 642. Both were replaced under warranty.
It can happen, it's relatively rare, and I guess I just have a touch of bad luck.
If it's covered under warranty, the will be replaced. New SN, so FFL will be involved -that's the way SW does it.

I have 7 J Frames and a bunch of 686 variants with 2.5" and 3" barrels (686 PC 2.5", 386NG, 586 L Comp). Go for the 686 2.5", or even the PC 2.5" version. Believe it or not it is just as easy for me to carry a 686 2.5" as it is a J Frame. That's why I rarely carry my J Frames anymore.
Just make sure you get a good holster and carry belt. I carry my 686 2.5" PC wearing shorts and a t shirt daily. I live in South Florida.

That's exactly what happened to mine. Someone linked my post above. Just when the trigger smoothed out nicely ( after a lot of dry firing) boom the hammer stud brakes. And it didn't have many rounds thru it. Mine was a 442. They sent me a new one. While it was at the factory I bought do I dear say a .......Ruger LCR in 38spl. Gotta tell yea I've been shooting the hell out of it and I love it. Yes it's god awful ugly but the smooth trigger makes it a pleasure to shoot and the grips aren't bad either. The POI is dead on. I still love all my S+W's but I think I've found a new carry gun. So I started thinking:
Pros of owning the Ruger
No broken hammer studs.
No cracks under the forcing cone.
No rusted cylinder or barrel 442 or peeling finish on the 642
no cylinder slipping past the cylinder stop.
No lock although mine didn't have one anyway.
No over tightening of the barrel at the factory.
You can't change out the front sight if you want to.
No dry firing needed to smooth out the trigger.
It's 2oz lighter.
Now the cons of owing the Ruger
It's Ugly as sin.
You are very limited to replaciement of the grips.
The trigger guard is a little bigger.
For now my new 442 is a sleep in the safe. No bashing here I have many S+W handguns I would never part with but this is just something new for me. Who knows I may get tired of the LCR and open the safe
