Im into hog hunting and just bought a .460 not to long ago.
Ive got a buddy that's been reloading (Hornady bullets) for me and I cant get anything to group worth a schit at any powder range.......

Is there another bullet that works better. I don't want a hollow point. Im looking for a wide meplat in the 200-300Gr range for hunting.

PLEASE HELP!!

I don't have any problem with the 240 or 300 XTP MAG Hornady bullets. They group well over a wide range of loads and powders.

I use H110 typically with the 240 XTP MAG but have used A9, 2400, N110, and LilGun with good result.

I use IMR4227 with the 300 XTP MAG for the past several years with my hunting load. Good results also with the same group of powders mentioned above.

Note the regular XTP are not rate for the velocities achievable with the 460. I had several jacket separation with the 250 XTP before I did a little research. I would only use them with Trailboss now.

I have also used Barnes and Cutting Edge bullets also with no problems while hunting.

I have shoot the 300 Speer and Swift bullets on paper and they behave just like the Hornady XTP MAGs. I suspect terminal performance would be similar.

I only used the FTX 200 Hornady bullet on 1 pig and will not use them again on game animals. Opened way to fast and fragmented, ruined a lot of meat. To top it off it was out of my 5" - would of been worse out of a longer barrel. Know others whom have had same experience.

All the areas I hunt require expanding bullets so I cannot comment on terminal performance on lead. I have tested several different weight HC gas checked bullets from Matts Bullet and they also group well from my guns except my 10.5" were I think they need to be sized a little smaller (tighter throat). I hope to actual try these in Alaska this fall- going to use the 355 with 65% meplat.

Which 460 do you have?
What distance you shooting?
What Hornady bullet was he reloading for you?

Good luck and be safe
Ruggy

Going to use the 300 XTP MAG tomorrow morning on pig - if I can find them, last outing below (240 Cutting Edge bullet on H110)

Thanks for the info Ruggy.
You asked,,,,"Which 460 do you have? The 8" barrel
What distance you shooting? From 30 yds to 100 yds
What Hornady bullet was he reloading for you? The XTP with the H110.

Where can I find a flat nose wide meplat that will work in a .460?

My experience with lead so far is you need gas check if you are going to run the bullet at 460 velocities.

Those listed above I would not push faster the 1400 fps.

I really like the 355 grain GC and plan to work them up and test them this year.

None of the XTP are suitable for the 460, they are are .451 instead of .452

I agree with ruggyh, @ legitimate .460 velocities, your best bet with lead bullets is to use a gas checked. You will find tho, that quality commercial gas checked bullets will cost as much as quality jacketed bullets and offer very little difference in performance outta the .460.

What I see all too often is folk spend the big bucks for a .460 and then want to go cheap on the ammo they shoot outta it. They buy bullets intended for .45 Colt(standard XTPs for example) and then wonder why they get poor performance(both ballistically and terminally) and premature forcing cone erosion.

My .460 and all others I have shot or seen shot were extremely accurate when the proper ammo was used. If you are having accuracy problems and it's not a optics problem(cheap scopes on a .460 don't work either), I suspect it's your buddy's reloaded ammo. I would learn to reload you own. The .460 is unlike most other handguns when it comes to reloading for it. The caliber/platform really shines with handloaded ammo, but I would be really leery of using ammo someone else loaded.

My pet hunting load for my .460 is either a 300gr XTP-MAG or Deep Curl, over a slightly compressed load of IMR4227. Refer to a legitimate manual, either bound or online, for recipes. Some P.C. .460s are known to have tight throats and thus will produce higher pressure than others. Start low and work up carefully. Sticky extraction means you have gone too far and need to back down.

Sorry but the last sentence is wrong. I load Hornady 300 grain XTP Mags and they are .452. I also like Cast Performance 360 grain WLNGC heat treated bullets. I use Lil Gun powder and Winchester primers.

Please reread what I said - XTP and XTP MAGs are differnt bullets
