Default Shooting my old Model 10

Last night I shot the old S&W Model 10 purchased used a month or so ago, using a variety of handloaded 125 grain and 158 grain bullets. Some in the middle range for power, some pushing up into +P.

This old work horse (former Victoria, Australia police gun) is as smooth and accurate as can be. These things were made to be shot. At 7 yards, shooting 100 rounds, almost everything was in a 2" circle, firing double action. This gun is more accurate -- or I am more accurate with this gun -- than anything else I own.

Shooting the Mdl 642 afterwards was the usual grab it and hold on type of shooting with a snub. Nothing takes the place of practice with these little monsters. They can be accurate too, but it seems like they are meant to be shot quickly, not slowly, so practical accuracy drops off. Everything within a 6" circle at 7 yards over about 35 rounds, though -- getting better with it.

Shooting a nice 9mm plastic semi-auto afterwards was nowhere near as much fun as the revolvers. There is just something about a revolver, and the way it rewards practice.

I have one of those model 10 police trade ins too. Mine shoots as good as yours does. I love it.

I agree about the 642 also, that's my normal carry piece. But I figure if I ever need it's probably going to be up close anyway.

Everyone likes a Model 10 And I also love to shoot a box of plinkers through my 642 at each range session. I feel pretty good if I can do as Clint Smith of Thunder ranch recommends with a snubby---"5 shots, rapid fire, off hand, consistently into a pie plate at 7 yards, and you've arrived"

BM Grip, while we are waiting for Rover to post some pics of his here are some of the Aussie M10-11 heavy barrel round butt ex Victoria Police S&W that I got last month from Bud's Gun Shop

This is how it looked right after I picked it up, a bit dirty with a little surface rust and really nasty Uncle Mike's grips.

That is the Victoria Police Armory Property Sticker

The Model 10-11 cleaned up with a pair of round butt target grips that I had laying around with my M64-3, 3" round butt.

The M&P mdl. 10 is one of the best. To bad you can not buy a new one. The glock mdl 19, colt 1911,Browning hi power, and CZ75. Best fighting handguns ever IMHO.

I inherited my Dad's 10-6. It's like new. I have the original box and paperwork. Not a bad mark on it. I wonder if he ever shot it. I cleaned and lubed it and took it to the range. I put about 36 rounds through it and could have easily put them all in one ragged hole at six yards if I would have tried.

I found my homely 10-5 4 inch but with character I found not long ago to be among my best shooters. Tapered barrel and a very nice trigger.

It's very hard to beat a heavy barrel Mod 10 for pure shooting pleasure.

And if I saw a new one with a 3" barrel, I'd be breaking into the coin jar to get enough dinero to buy one -- immediately!

For some reason, every once in awhile, a company hits a perfect 10 (no pun actually intended) with a product. S&W did that with the Model 10. All of mine, and I have quite a few, are supremely accurate and fun to shoot - good job, pardner!

Well I bought one of the new ones
Unfortunately it does not lend itself to having reduced power Wolf Springs ( 13 lb ) installed --Light primer hits
Had no problems with my 65-5 using the same springs

The model 10...S&W's bread and butter gun for purt-near
100 years. Couple of my house guns.
Would like to add a model 13 3" in nickel someday.

Ah, not without a lock, and the polishing and blueing do not make the grade. Plus all the other issues or features that made be included.

Wyatt P Tato, I know! I really don't know why anybody would get one of the new made "Classic" M10"s when there are so many good used ones floating around!
