Picked this up yesterday (new pics added)
appears to be an unfired model 64-4 box papers and cleaning kit. Box states special which makes sense since it has a factory bobbed hammer and DAO. Serial BEK0xxx. I don't collect unfired weapons so I will either shoot it or trade it (have not decided) I do not believe these grips are original to the gun as the seller also had a set of rubber uncle mike grips marked smith and wesson inside. He thought these had come with the gun .
The seller is an older gentleman with a boatload of unfired in the box S&W this is the only one he was parting with right now as it was a duplicate.
This gun does have an ID number that appears to be added after the factory on the inside of the yoke/arm. I assume this was ordered by some agency and just never used.
Would Smith be able to tell me based on the serial number where this weapon originally went?

Yes. But it will cost you 50 bucks. It's called a "Factory Letter".
Can you post a pic of the box end label?

The -4 was reserved for 2-inch M64's only. It was used from 1988 to 1998 when the new frame, with frame mount firing pin, was introduced. I think your gun, based on the s/n, was made in November - December of 1989.
The product code of 102501 is for the double action only (DAO) version. Until now, I'd never seen one before in the box. The 102502 is the same gun with a traditional action and is far more common. Other notable features of your gun are tapered barrel, flash chrome hammer and trigger (they're carbon steel underneath), Magna stocks, and matte finish.
The other numbers you see on the yoke are normal. They're called "assembly numbers". They're used to keep matched parts together during production. If you take the stocks off, and examine the gun carefully, you'll find a whole slew of little marks, letters, numbers, and symbols.

It's possible, but nothing on the label indicates that (which doesn't really mean anything, one way or the other). S&W was using Uncle Mike grips on certain models in 1989. What makes you ask the question? Was there a pair in the box?

Congrats on your newest!
They make great carry guns as well as shooters, but since it has the box and is unfired it would have greater value.

Yes the seller thinks he remembers them coming on the gun and then he put the magnas on. I think he thought they were not original to the gun.

The SCSW lists product code 102501 as made for N.Y. City PD. Nice score!
It probably cam with traditional Magna stocks. Those are later versions and S&W didn't start supplying rubber grips until the mid-1990's.

I'm not so sure. Uncle Mike grips were a new supplier but in wide use by S&W in 1989 when the OP's gun was shipped. Also, those Magnas look more modern. Like they were made in the last couple of years. Maybe it's the pictures (which aren't exactly "high-res"), but they look like they might be laminates. Even the checkering pattern is different than that on my old Magnas.
Does the SCoSW say anything about 102501's stocks?

Spoke to the seller. The Magnas are from S&W parts store. He purchased the gun with the uncle mikes but was never sure if they came with the gun from the factory( hence purchasing the Magnas). I appreciate all of the help in identifying my find. Sorry for the pics we are living with a family member awaiting our house to be complete and everything is packed. So phone pics are all I have.

received the uncle mikes grips from the seller. added pics with grips and frame without grips. I have decided to move this on as it deserves to remain in its original condition and I do not collect unfired guns. I really want a 581/681 to add to the safe. I am unsure as to what to price the M64 at after finding out a little about its pedigree from the members here.
I would appreciate any advice that is offered.

I think at $500 it would sell pretty fast on the forum's "For Sale" page. Maybe as high as $700 to the right collector. I don't see the modern non-pinned .38 Spl guns selling for mega bucks. Even when they're NIB.
