I was looking for a 500 magnum revolver on a facebook forum and someone told me a gunsmith had a 460 for sale. I drove an hour and a half out to this guys house. He had the 460 sitting in an old glass jewelry display case and said it had been sitting there for some years. It was in a survival kit with a knife, firestarter, bear survival book and some other stuff. None of it was used but he and his son had fired 9 rounds out of the gun.

Anyway, I really wanted a 500 to hunt with so I tried to talk him off his $1000 price tag but he said that's what he had in it and he wanted to get that out of it. He originally was asking 1200 but he came down to a thousand. I passed and went home. Started googling about the gun and found out it was a collector item and saw prices from 1500-2500 and I got scared I made a mistake. I drove back out and bought it for a thousand.

The barrel is too short for hunting in my opinion, but it looks like it was really meant as a bear protection gun or something for places like Alaska. I just want a 500 for hunting, so I have a couple of questions.

How much you think it's really worth, can't find a straight answer on the internet. I saw some sold for all sorts of prices but some of those posts are a few years old. Also see current ads of people asking ridiculous prices up to 4 grand.

Do you think it would be reasonable to try and trade it for a hunting 500 and a thousand dollars, lol. I know it seems absurd but if it's really worth a couple thousand I had greedy thoughts of getting my money back and a free 500 mag to boot. Am I being too unreasonable?

Here is a pic of the actual gun, sorry if it's not high quality it was taken on a phone. I have the original box of bullets as well, it's a box of 20 and 9 were fired from the box. According to the gunsmith that's all that were ever fired. His son fired 2 rounds and he fired 2, then about a year later he was showing it to someone and they fired 5 rounds out of it.

And to the moderator, this is just a question, this gun is not for sale yet. I am trying to gather more information on how many were made and what the real value is. If I decide to sell I'll place an ad in the appropriate forum.

You can ask whatever you think it's worth to you & if someone thinks it's worth that to them they'll buy it. You're not forcing them. And if it doesn't sell at your original asking price you'll lower it until it sells or you decide to keep it afterall.

I just found a 500ES at a reasonable price & I see they're selling for $2500-2700 someplaces. I wouldn't pay that but apparently some are. I haven't seen any listings for the 460ES but I'd think I'd be similar. They were $1400 retail when new.

Definitely a nice package that S&W doesn't offer anymore, & likely won't again, intended for close range use, or just fondling. :D

You got it for a very good price. If you list it on an online auction and the right buyer comes along you may very well get close to your stated goal, but at the very least you will have your 500 and some extra cash. It will likely only go up in value so you may consider keeping it if you can, however.

Since you asked... Do not get confused with asking prices and selling prices. You thought the price was too high at 1K and walked at first sighting. I don't believe there are that many collectors or others that will pony up 2x plus of the original list price for a model still in production that has such a limited use barrel length. If that catalogued model was a good seller shouldn't the factory still be offering it? Now you want your money back and a free gun?

I also think you got a great deal on that 460ES. I wouldn't have hesitated to purchase that deal at all! I have the 500ES and have been looking for the "Little" brother in the 460ES. I had a 460ES without the kit but sold that one off in hopes of finding one someday with the kit. You got an excellent deal as selling prices I have seen recently on gun auctions have gone from $1700 to as high as $2300. I wouldn't pay that much but there are those out there who will. The problem with the selling prices is that you have fees to pay so your take is a bit less than you think but as mentioned above, you should be able to find a used 500 around $1,000 +/- and end up with approx. $500 extra or keep it as they have just been going up in value lately. Again, $1000 for a lightly used 460ES in the box is a great deal!

+1, that was a GREAT deal!!

Why not keep the 460 and hunt with it, that was a great deal and sweet revolver man!

A lot of states have a minimum required barrel length to legally hunt with a handgun. Plus longer barrel equals longer sight radius for accuracy and more velocity for longer shots. I don't think I would hunt with anything under a 6" barrel.

You got a good deal on a revolver with little utility.

Put it on an on line auction site so you make money to put into a better gun.
