There's a Model 60 that I am considering purchasing that has a serial # prefix of CAY. CAY isn't even listed in the Standard Catalog. CAM and CAN are both listed as 1996, but no CAY. Any ideas, or have any of you seen a serial # prefix of CAY? Nearly all of my revolvers are pre 1975 and I freely admit ignorance on the newer guns.

Thanks much for any input,

It's a 60-7, and I was guessing around 1996, as well, but it was just a guess. By the way, the standard catalog lists CAM and CAN as Jan of 1996.

Thanks.

April of 1996.

I have my own study of S&W s/n ship dates, not based on the SCoSW. Mine comes from date codes taken from boxes.

Great info, and thanks. The Model 60 in question is a Lady Smith I may buy for my wife. It has laminated rosewood grips, and those (supposedly) weren't introduced until 1994, so '96 makes sense.

Thanks a ton,

A Lady Smith from that era would be a -9 and the product code was 102414. I don't think the -9 version was made in large numbers.

If you buy it post some pictures, include the box end label, if you get the box (which would probably be a blue plastic case. Some shipped in a more fancy Lady Smith case).

The seller is a very reputable dealer and he said it is a -7. Mistakes do happen, so I will clarify that. According to the std catalog, the -9 engineering change was incorporation of the .357 frame in 1996, and the lady smith rosewood laminate grips were introduced in 1994. Who knows...the one standard with S&W is that every rule has exceptions.

The gun comes with a black hard plastic case with a cleaning kit in the appropriate slots and a soft carrying bag that says Lady Smith in repeating rows. The gun's serial # is CAY1587. I'll see if I can clarify the -7 vs -9.

Attached is a photo of a gun that I found doing a google search that looks just like the one I'm interested in. It was advertised as a 60-7 Ladysmith. By the way, do you think $600-shipped--is too much for the gun, hardcase with cleaning kit and soft carrying case?

It could be a -7. The transition to the -9 began in January of 1996 (that's the earliest one I've seen). The -7 being a .38 Spl on the old style frame, and the -9 being a .357 Mag on the new style "J-Magnum" frame.

Dash numbers on M60's can be confusing because there are (1) so many (IINM they're up to 18, now), and (2) they often have more than one dash number in production simultaneously.

Regarding $600, that's a good price in my book. Regardless of whether it's a -7 or -9. Fully valued, but fair. A Lady Smith will often sell at a $100 premium over an near identical standard gun.

If you get it, look around in all the pockets and under the foam liners in the case for the end labels. They sometimes put some spare labels in there under the foam. With the label we could nail down the ship date and product code 100%.

I can see in the picture it's got the traditional frame (I can see the rivet for the firing pin on the hammer). So it is a -7 in .38 Spl.

Again, thanks for all the input. I'll let you know what happens one way or the other.

Great revolver. Here is my wife's 60-9, March 1999. Came in the fancy LS jewel case. Not sure how long it shipped in this case. Very accurate and fun to shoot in 38. 357 not so fun.
