Hated Retirement
My sons wife had his 55th birthday at the range last night. My wife hasn't shot in awhile due to health problems so I took the M-10 I built for her over 30 years ago. She has small hands so I took an old M-10 thin bbl of indeterminate age and built it for her. I spent a few hours filing and made it a round butt. Worked on the action till it was glassy smooth. A gunsmith friend did a beautiful blue job on it . It would put every shot in a 5" circle at 25 yds with anything you loaded it with. Arthritis has made her hands incapable of using it anymore. Cleaned it and it went to the back of the cabinet. Several people have tried to buy it over the years but I know I'll never sell it. It spent the last 30 years on her side of the bed, I know its just a piece of steel to most folks but its a lot more than that to me.

A good S&W revolver can be a lot more than a tool. No one knows quite why -- whether it is the classic design, the workmanship that went into it, the customizing touches added, the relationship built while learning to use it, the seriousness of its purpose, the enjoyable times spent with it.
I have a couple that I intend to keep until I check out of the net, when they will be passed along in the family.

Sell a gun? what a novel thought! That's like not keeping a copy of the Constitution on my desk.

It's in the nature of guns to be shot.
It's in the nature of planes to be flown.
It's in the nature of ships to be sailed.
You get the idea. Good for you! Never sell it, but don't be afraid to shoot it.

I've got a 5" pre 29 that has been retired as it holds too much sentimental attachment to it. Never thought I would feel this way about a gun, but here I are!!!!!

I've been blessed to be married to the same gal for going on 37 years. She is also recently disabled due to a brain injury. We can't do some of the things we used to do, but still enjoy a lot of things together. Keep the gun. I sold my wife's Harley shortly after her injury and I have always regretted it although she doesn't ride it anymore.

If my medical issues gets so bad I can't hold a Smith, I'll get a Ransom Rest and keep shooting.

I just don't shoot many magnums any longer, and I did give up High Power and small bore rifle (I can't get up and down in positions any longer), but that is about the only concessions I have given to my shooting.

With hobbies and life, accepting the realization that you no longer can do something the way you used to or not at all is bitter pill to swallow. I'm at the age where arthritis is constantly trying to send me a message to that effect, but I'm fortunate the enjoyment I get from shooting or customizing a gun is still stronger than the pain the arthritis tries to inflict.
But everyday I'm humbled and reminded that my worries in being able to continue my hobby is nothing compared to my wife's daily battle with Parkinson's Disease... she's had to swallow many a bitter pill about no longer being able to do this or that in the 8 years since she was diagnosed.
Throughout the house she has many remnants of hobbies she enjoyed immensely but can no longer do, such as knitting. But just having all of the knitting tools still around gives her enjoyment unto itself. I imagine my guns will eventually serve the same purpose for me too.

I have two handguns that I will never sell. A colt Pocket 9 and a S&W 986, both bought for me by my wife of (just 3 days ago) 50 years. Some one in my family will someday inherit them. I have arthritis also, but so far can still shoot fairly well. As a matter of fact, I shot the best I have ever done at the local Steel shoot on Saturday the day after my Anniversary wit the 986 she bought me. I hope I never have to gie up on shooting, I know I will never give up those two guns.
