Damage or flaw?
I picked up a nice 65-2 last week. Excellent overall condition. After i fired it for the first time...some light .38 Special...i cleaned it and noticed two tiny marks the size of pin marks. Is this a production flaw or damage... And either way should i be concerned? Thanks.

It is hard to imagine how anything could bang the frame in that area enough to create divots, so I am guessing void in the original metal. I would consider them "character builders".
But, if they really bother you . . . perhaps I could take that poor defective revolver off you hand?
No, huh? I didn't think so . . . enjoy your lovely revolver, sir!

Nice try! That's my original feeling too. I appreciate it.

Neither one. Sometimes one, sometimes two, but always there! No one seems to really know, but the two common ideas are it is either an inspection mark, or a Brinnell test to verify frame hardness. It is even on Airweight frames.
I cannot believe that two people who supposedly are S&W owners have never observed this at some time!!!!!!

Photo resolution isn't the best but they kind of look like two punch pricks to me.

I doubt they are marks from a hardness tester as a flat smooth surface gives the best reading. Not impossible though. Possibly index marks for machining setups. Be interesting to know.
S&W frames are to soft to check good with a Rockwell C diamond indicator. A ball indicator in Rockwell B will work.

Interesting. This is the second Smith and Wesson I've had. Never noticed it on the 640-1 that is temporarily sold to a buddy. I wanted a 4" gun...now I'll be getting my snubby back.
