I never bought the 2 5/8" 686 when it was released. I already owned the 2 5/8" 627 and 657 revolvers
I also had purchased the 2" 327 at about the same time
I used to own a 386PD revolver. I changed out the rear sight for the C&S Extreme Duty, this was done years before the Night Guard revolvers hit the market
However when the 327 Night Guard was released, the 386 went away.
The steel framed revolvers must be carried in a holster. They are heavy. However the Scandium framed wheel guns will all carry in a front pocket. Yes, I have carried all of them and my other snubby N-frames in 5.11 Covert Khakis. These provide a huge front pocket that works great.
In your original post you say
I currently own a J frame Chief's Special from the 70's, and want a .357 I can carry
Is there a reason that you do not want a J or K frame 357 Magnum?
I switched to the 357 J-Magnum as my backup gun in 1996 when it first came out and still usually carry one to this day, I qualified every year with the 357 Magnum 640, 60 or 340PD.
The steel J-Magnums are fairly controllable for anyone that can shoot a K-frame 357 magnum and while the Scandium ones are not fun to shoot, they are not meant to be plinkers or range guns.
The J-Magnums are far easier to conceal and carry than the L or N frame snubbies.
