Default revolver serial numbers

Hello everyone I am new to the forum and looking for help with a couple serial numbers. I have a 629-4 CCB7819 and an old model 49 I inherited, the only numbers I can see on there are 81811. Any help would be appreciated and I look forward to being on the forum.

Welcome to the forum.

Fitting your number in between and beside numbers in the incomplete lest of serial numbers in the Standard Catalog of S&W it looks like 1997 for your 629-4 and 1956 for your 49. However, if your 49 is stamped "mod. 49" it is not that old which could be accounted for by frames shipping out of serial number sequence or you giving us its assembly number instead of its serial number. The serial number is on the bottom of the butt.

Thanks for the info on the 629-4, that thing is on its second firing pin within maybe 200 rounds. Hopefully I can get this problem resolved. Was just looking to get more info on this gun. Thanks again!

Looks like the 629 is from late 1994 & your model 49 is from about June 1978.

The "hammer nose" on these is pretty sturdy, so two broken parts is probably a problem elsewhere in the gun. If you haven't already done so, having it checked by someone who is able to do more than replace the part might be in order. The factory still works on this model and may help here.

Based on seven other CCB s/n's I've recorded that all ship in that month and year. There's always the possibility of "slippage" with S&W s/n's so there's a chance it shipped a few months later. But popular models, like a M629, went out-the-door and on the truck pretty quick after manufacture.

Dash 4's were being shipped as late as June of 1998, so you're okay there.
