586 2 1/2"?
I've seen the 686 2 1/2" in S&W's catalog, but no 586 with the same barrel length. Does anyone know if they ever built one, or have plans to build it? The 3" they show looks great, but holy smokes! That's one expensive gun. Maybe I should post this on the Wish List section. I have a 6" and a 4", and a 2 1/2" sure would make a nice set.

There was a very limited run of M586 with 2.5" Barrels. Don't know if they were Lew Horton, Jovino or just a standard issue with round butt.
Had one, but let it get away.

If you find one, it will not be cheap unless the person selling it doesn't know about it. I had one years ago and sold it to a forum member who was avid to have it.
I don't know how many were made but at that time the buyer led me to believe there is probably more than one version with the 2.5" barrel. Apparently some were shipped with Combat stocks and some were shipped with Hogues. My gun came with Hogues, which caused some confusion with the buyer, but he called me later to tell me what he had learned.

WOW
Those are a very nice set. Out of my price range however. Man it would be nice to be loaded once in a while. It might dull your appreciation for nice things however.

I got a couple blue 2 1/2". Seems like they were called uncatalogued dealer specials.
A 3" 586-4 is even harder to find.

I've only seen them here on the forum and once in a blue moon posted on GB. Nice revolvers but out of my price range. NEVER have seen a cheap one. I personally like the 3" version much more as it's longer ejector rod will eject each spent cases everytime you stroke it. Something the 2.5" models don't always do. Especially with hot round. I've seen this with my 2.5 & 3" 686's.

Good point on the ejector rod, Sportsterguy. After looking and reading, I believe either the 2.5" OR the 3" would make me happy. I obviously have my sights set high, but either one would complete the set very well. I know cost on either one would be substantial.

One of the good things about being my age is I was setting up at gunshows around the turn of the century. S&Ws were not as highly regarded then and many gun guys wanted nothing to do with them because S&W agreed to the Clinton lock. First gun I ever bought was back in 1974 and it was a used mod 36 3" rb. I've still got it and I never held a grudge against S&W over politics.
I well remember $250-300 k22's and $200-250 mod 28s. Collecting S&Ws wasn't on my radar screen until about 2004 when I bought a 27-2, 5" in the presentation case. I started accumulating and it was easy pickings for a couple years. $400 would buy about anything at the small national guard armory shows. Prices started going up and all the small town sellers thought their shooters were worth about the same as the Joe/Deb or Noconee Trader's lnib stuff on the internet. The low hanging fruit was harvested and the gold rush was over. But, even today, a blind hog can find an acorn once in a while.

S & W 586-4 2 1/2"
I was lucky enough to pick up one from Praco in Waco, Texas back in 2005. Still have it. Nice little packing piece.

Hey guys, sorry to hijack the thread but the 586 2.5" is also my Grail gun and was wondering if any of you with might be willing to work a trade for a lnib kcomp model 19. Or if anyone knows of someone wanting to trade theirs. Thanks for the help. Also posted in guns for sale and trade section
