Do you use wax or oil on your Stainless Revolvers

I've read the posts about using wax or oil on blued guns. Who uses wax on your Stainless guns? Or, is oil best for stainless? I will be using my 640-3 for personal consented carry.

I'm not sure why you would use wax on a stainless gun. I guess it won't hurt anything but kind of seems pointless to me.

Oil is fine. A little protection and a little lubrication is more than sufficient for a stainless revolver.

I clean the surface, bore and cylinder of my stainless guns with a Birchwood Casey Lead Removal Cloth and then wipe with a Rem Oil cloth before putting them away.

Me too StakeOut. Use to use the old silicone cloths but picked up that green Remington cloth I found at a Bass Pro. Seems OK. Suppose to have some Rem oil plus rust inhibitors according to the box.

I have a 642. I put a drop of Break Free on a patch and use that to wipe down the exterior of the cylinder, barrel, yoke, trigger, and cylinder release latch, followed by a dry rag. I do this once I've finished cleaning and lubricating my gun, which happens about once every 1-2 months or after every range session, whichever comes first. At the end of the day (or sometimes twice a day if it's really hot and humid), I just do a quick wipe down with a dry rag. So far I haven't had any rust issues.

Personally, I'm not sure I'd wax a gun, either blued or stainless, that I'd be using as a carry gun. To me it seems like too much trouble for a gun that's going to be seeing some wear anyway. When I had blued guns I used either a rag with some Break Free on it or a silicone rag to wipe them down periodically and while there was definitely finish wear, there was no rust.

The only reason I can think of for using wax on a stainless steel gun would be if it had some kind of special finish that you wanted to preserve, i.e., if you had a matte or frosted finish but didn't want your holster to polish wear lines on it.

Wilson Combat Ultimate Oil in and on my stainless PC 627; Silicone on the exterior of my blued PC 586 L-Comp.

SS ain't impervious.....

A SS gun will rust with sweat or exposure to some compounds so I think it's a good idea to keep a little oil film on it. Just wipe it off before use and I put it back on by wiping with a very slightly oily rag.

l use a home brew ''wax''... Bens Red
50% bees wax
30% Lucas Hi Temp Grease
10% Johnsons Paste Wax
5% Dexron
5% STP
Works GREAT up to 1500FPS on Smith&Wesson
Stainless and Moly barrels..Cast bullets love it too.

Waxed barrel is a happy barrel with Ben's Red

I used stainless guns (M64s, M65s) for training guns back in the 80's. Seldom got cleaned. Wax? Oil? What are those? Never any pitting or corrosion (stainless can do something akin to rusting). I keep a small amount of lube in the action, nothing on the outside.

BUT, my guns are tools. They exist for work. When I was mechanicking for a living I used to see other folks wax their Snap-On tools to maintain the shiny luster. Used to watch them fall out of the planes, too.

I make sure there's a good coat of oil on the case hardened hammers and triggers (except for the face). Any other non-stainless parts too like iron sights. The stainless itself...I've tried Ren Wax and didn't see any difference post-shooting.

Blued guns, yes to Ren Wax. Definitely. And I use silicone cloths too. Western WA isn't very humid but it's almost always damp.

I ordered a small tub of Ren wax last month and finally got around to my 500 10 1/2" last night. It took me 3+ hours, and I couldn't believe the end result. I've babied the gun for 13 years -- but it's never looked this good.

Even after wiping the gun down with a soft, white cloth before I started with the wax the applicator (old white tube sock over my finger) turned a dark color when I applied the wax.

I also wax my 6-hole, shooter 617 and our blue and black (M&P 340 & 360PD) revolvers with equally pleasing results. I haven't had the nerve to wax my 98% Victory Model yet, but if Ren wax is good enough for museums....

I oil the moving parts on all of them.

I've read that manufacturers "wax" stainless guns. And every few years it's not a bad thing.

Also read that a wipe down and polishing with Flitz achieves
about the same thing.

Myself---I've never bothered

But what I do do is use a silicone cloth to wipe the gun down after
and during a range session. Seems to keep stop or clean away any buildup of powder residue.

I don't have many stainless guns, just one now, but I pretty much don't do anything to them. Oil the internals once in a while of course. Then whatever runs out gets wiped on the outside. I'll wipe them off with a silicone rag from time to time.

That's about it.

To tell you the truth, for years I didn't do much more to a blue gun and I never had a rust problem. I recently got a can of Ren Wax, and they're all waxed up now, but it was more to make them shine than for rust protection. And an excuse to get them out of the safe.
