Hello out there.

I picked this J-frame Model 342 a few years ago with a Crimson Trace laser grip already installed and it is so light, you would think it is a toy. It is rated for 38spl +P but it kicks like a mule with them so I only shoot a few at the range after some mild 130 gr. tmj rounds to confirm it still hits where the laser is pointed
These AirLite Ti guns are great for carry as they weight almost nothing but, when they go bang, you better be holding on!

Those are nice little revolvers. It's a shame the S&W discontinued 342s. Maybe it's just me but, I like them more than the 642.

It IS a nice lightweight gun. Many LEOs carry them in an outer jacket pocket as insurance. Mine, however, sits in the safe while my 642s and 340s see daily duty. Kicks terribly, even with service loads and wadcutters, and I'm an experienced J-frame shooter. There is a very knowledgeable retired LEO on this forum who agrees with this finding.

WARNING: Do not use GunScrubber on the 342. The ClearKote (I think it's called) finish will peel. It's the only gun to have this problem. Strangely enough, it does not affect the sister 337. Must be a different finish product.

Thanks for the replies. Actually, my most-carried J frame is a mid-'90's Model 442 that has been factory nickel coated. It is usually carried in a leather Don Hume pocket holster.

The Model 342 sits in the safe most of the time but, tee shirts and shorts weather (not too uncommon around here) sometimes brings out the Model 342. The 4 oz. or so heavier Model 442 still gets consideration in hot weather.
