442 and 158 GR Wadcutter Question
I always carry my 442 with Gold Dot .38Spl +P 135 gr bullets that are made for short barrel revolvers. After reading many Forum member comments about semi-wadcutters and with cooler weather approaching I thought I would give them a try. I purchased a box of Ultramax .38 spl 158gr semi-wadcutters that I'm considering using for carry. So, my question is, does anyone have any experience with them? Is this the same 158 gr semi-wadcutters others are using for carry rounds? I realize I need to test these with my 442 and will before carrying. The box does not say +P and they are remanufactured. I'm sure a lot of you are reloading your own or maybe using another brand. Thanks!

Several thoughts in the subject:
o I've had good luck with Ultramax in the past.
o I wouldn't use reloads/re-manufactured ammo for defense. Ultramax makes new ammo also.
o I'd probably just stay with the Gold Dots. Tests I've read show they do OK with heavy clothing and are probably more effective than standard pressure SWCs.
o If I were going to change ammo for more penetration, I'd go with Buffalo Bore or Double Tap hard cast full wad cutters -- both of which I have in my ammo stash.

Not sure what cooler weather have to do with what ammo you use?
In any event, I would not rely on re-manufactured ammo for defense.

By saying "cooler weather" I was implying more layers of clothes.

I, myself would stick with the Gold Dots. The New York PD reported good results on the street in their back up and off duty guns. You know it gets cold there.

Hard to say how that actually affects expansion, and/or penetration. I've seen test results on both sides of the fence.

I will probably stick with the Gold Dots. I always have faith they will do the job if I do mine and don't feel under gunned with them. I appreciate the input!

Speer Gold Dots, and Remington Golden Saber, are my favorites!
The Golden Sabers are sort of a sleeper. They have excellent test results. They're always available, and at reasonable prices.
