IMG_2801.jpgIMG_2796.jpgI picked up my new 6" 586 Classic today and so far everything looks great. No canted barrel , fit and finish looks great , trigger feels really good so far so good. I won't be able to shot it until Saturday and it's killing me. Smith must have the sent their barrel installers to school. I hope she shoots as good as she looks .

I bought a 4" and a 6" 586 Classic this year. Both have good fit and finish. Both of them, (and a Model 57 Classic also new this year) have really good actions with the best trigger staging I've experienced in any S&W revolver, old or new. Accuracy is excellent on both 586's and the 57 Classic is the most accurate revolver I own. The only problem I've had is that the sight blade screw over the barrel/cylinder gap is too short to completely fill the hole. This causes the hot gasses from the b/c gap to be focused like a little cutting jet right on the cylinder sides just under that screw. The resulting scortch marks are almost impossible to remove completely. I got some longer blued screws and filed them to perfectly fill the hole. this solved the problem. I have noticed this screw is now longer on some of the newest guns. Enjoy that 586!

Is that red disk in the cylinder something S&W is including with new guns nowadays? I've seen those included with other manufacturers, but not with a Smith.

Range time

After taking the side cover off my 586-8 for a look see ,good cleaning ,and relubing with some dry moly lube I was able to test fire my new 586. I first fired 20 rounds of Winchester white box 38 special,158 gr. FMJ at 15 yards offhand. I'm very pleased with point of aim and this new 586 has one of the best factory triggers I have ever squeezed. I let my better half shot 10 rounds and she also liked the action and performance of the new revolver.

I moved on to some of my favorite reloads of 357 magnum with 158gr MBC .38 Match Hi-Tek LSWC's ,Federal 200 primers,Starline brass and 7.7gr. of AA No.5 again standing at 15 yards and the first 10 shots were inside a 3 1/2" target.
I shot another 40 rounds of my reloads and did not have to adjust sights some shots were at 25 yards at some 2 1/2" steel hanging targets that I welded up for my range. I was amazed at how well this revolver shot and the amount of hits I could make at the 25 yard distance. This new 586 Classic is as close to perfect of a firearm that I have ever owned from fit-finish to smooth action to feel and ease of shot placement. This will be my replacement range revolver for my 6" Colt Python that has become to risky to shot as often as I like. Great job Smith and Wesson you have proven that you can still produce a fine firearm hats off to you. No barrel canting , great fit and finish and giving me a choice of bluing and nice wood grips in this world of poly ,plastic and no style thanks!

Here's a few more pictures.

After shooting the barrel looked good and nothing out of ordinary under topstrap or cylinder gap and forcing cone area. Muzzle crown cut was spot on from factory also. I can't believe I was blessed with a good one with no reason to send back to the mothership.

I'm glad you are happy with your 586. They are great guns and I think any complaints we hear are the exception. I would wager that 98% of the 586's that leave the factory are like yours so thanks much for posting.

I'm mostly set for 586's but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new one. I've posted this pic before but since this IS a 586 thread...:p

edit: the 686 will have to do until I find that elusive 2 1/2" 586.

Yea, but we're just like the old revolvers. Us old guys are classics too!

Gorgeous gun man. Glad you got a good one. I'm new to the revolver bug but was first bitten by the 629. I love the full lug and 6 1/2 barrel. Have been struggling to decide on what will be the next acquisition, after realizing there must be another acquisition. Knew it had to be a .357 and while I've been flip-flopping around for a bit about WHICH .357, I'm comfortable saying THATS The One. Might want a 4" though. Just to keep it interesting, much as I adore the longer barrel. Sweet piece.

Thanks Mr.Harry. I thought about 4" barrel length but I have a 13-2 and a 66-8 both with 4" (66-8 = 4.25") barrel also I wanted to retire my 6" Python so that left a void. I hope to own a 586 or a model 19 with a 4" barrel in the near future because that is my favorite length for 357 magnum revolvers.

Buckeye...did you say you want to retire your Python?
I can see it all the way from here....a 2 mile long stretch of guys wanting to buy it.I know,I got one and am being offered muy pesos everytime I shoot it at the range.

Ok semi retirement. I'll never sell. :D

I am all with you on this one.Like they say:''they'll have to pry it out of my cold fingers when I'm dead''.
Qc

I bought it from a friend of mine in 1991 he used it for silhouette shooting and it has a sweet trigger job that I have receipt for $175 1980's dollars. He had rubber pachmyer grips on it but it came with it's original wood grips. It's a 1976 model and I would never sell because of the revolvers history means a lot to me that dollars couldn't replace.
