Value of a modified model 15
In my local store there is a model 15 that has been there a few years now. I've never picked it up. I'd probably fall for it if I did. It's priced at $1150. Aftermarket target barrel. 6 inch. Bobbed hammer. Seems kinda high to me. Any ideas greatly appreciated

I would let it sit because of the way you describe it.
And is it just me or is really strange to have a bobbed hammer on a gun with a 6 inch target barrel?
It could be just the ticket for someone I am sure, but for me if a gun has been modified it demands less $ then a stock gun, unless the modifications are top notch and desirable.

Not surprising that it has been there for a few years. The price is about 100% too high for me (maybe more), even if the gun is in perfect condition.

Are you kidding? I think that's outrageously over priced. If I'm not mistaken, a NIB Model 15 with tools, documents, and original box wouldn't command that kind of price. I'd love to hear the opinions of those more expert, but I think the ask is ridiculous.
Good luck,
Dave

Yea I thought it was way over priced. Just thought maybe the barrel added to it. Can't think of a brand but it's super heavy and adjustable on front and rear sight. Maybe an old race gun

Sounds like an old PPC gun. May have been put together by a noted gunsmith, might want to check it out for a name.

An optimistic person could offer $300.00 for it but may not be worth that much. I'd let it lay no matter who did what.

I wonder if it was modified by one of the more famous gun smiths and if that's why the're so proud of it?

These were my thoughts as well. Perhaps the original owner is trying to recover some of his/her cost from the conversion? In any event, too rich for my blood. I'd still let her lay.
Regards,
Dave

Sounds like a PPC gun. If it's in great shape a no name would be $400/500. A Clark, Davis, Glenn or one of the other big names may go $700/800 tops. Not much market for old PPC revolvers anymore.

I guess I'm just old. IF what we're talking about is really a PPC gun, a bobbed hammer is almost a standard. These guns are all about speed balanced with accuracy while shooting at 3, 7, 15, 25 and 50 yards. All shot double action and the hammers are usually bobbed to speed up the action. Here's a link to one for sale so young folks can see what I'm writing about.

I bought this 15-3 from 1970 exactly one year ago at the Orlando gunshow. Guy wanted $400 in the morning, let me have it for $325 after lunch. Has had a trigger job and a white laminate on the front sight. One of my favorite shooters. Be patient, model 15's were a "bread and butter" gun for S&W, tons made. Joe

FWIW, this is about what I would say. Years ago, when a few people still wanted PPC guns, the rule of thumb seemed to be that a really good PPC gun went for $700 used, no matter how much more you had in it.

Old PPC guns are still great shooters, and when fed the right ammo fabulously accurate. Take a stock Mod 15, add a slab barrel, Bomar, Wichita, etc custom sights, and do a fantastic action job and you have a PC gun. All that work from a Known gunsmith costs money, but you never get it back when sell in the gun. If you are interested in a really fine gun, offer then $550 or so and see what they say.

Sounds like a "Bill Davis" P P C gun to me. If so, he always roll-marked his name, and often used one of those odd looking adjustable front sights.
However, those of his most commonly seen (by me) were Model 10, 64, and 65.
The last I saw was in a pawn shop and had that same ridiculous price.
