Just picked up my new S&W Performance Center 629 with 7 1/2inch barrel and compensator (formerly called Light Hunter). It's an absolutely beautiful pistol with a very nice crisp trigger. I shot a couple of cylinders of 44 Special ammo through it and it handles extremely well - shoots very well to point of aim. Out of curiosity I used my Lyman digital trigger gauge (measures up to 12 pounds) to check the trigger pull weight. The single action pull was a consistent 5.5 pounds with the double action weight unknown as it exceeded 12 pounds every time I tried it. Is this pull weight typical of performance center 629's? I was expecting something lighter however it definitely feels less than the 5.5 pounds single action it measures.

Thanks!

Afternoon cladd1

As far as I can tell, yes, that is pretty typical.

About all the performance center does any more is install a lighter main spring & install a rather poorly adjusted trigger stop.

My last 2 performance center S&W revolvers came in at mid to high 11 lb double action.

You might try re-measuring the trigger pull with the cylinder open & cylinder release held forward (last 2 S&W's that I bought had very tight & dragging cylinders accounting for some of the added trigger pull weight in double action.

With a little shooting, a bit of trigger & spring work, shimming the hammer & trigger as well as shimming the crane you should be able to get a nice smooth 7.5# double action & about a 2-3/4# single action trigger pull.

My 629-2 doesn't have a trigger pull that's nearly that heavy. Double action is heavy of course but the single action pull is actually very light. I didn't buy that revolver new and I've always wondered if someone worked on the trigger before I got it. I was told it only had 2 owners before me and one was my brother. I know he wouldn't have doctored the trigger. Maybe the owner before him and maybe it actually had more owners than two. S&W told me it had been around a bit but I have no idea where they got that info. I just know I love the trigger on that revolver. it's very light for that type of handgun. I would guess it's well under 2 lbs..

Brand new, my M29-2 had a much nicer trigger than OP's PC gun: a measured 3 lbs sa and 10 da.

My gunsmith improved it even more.

All new smiths seem to have a 20lbs rebound slide spring in them from the factory. I clipped two coils of that spring in my 29-10 4". It still returns the trigger strongly and reliably. The trigger is still heavier than any of my factory dash two's and earlier guns......

My last (4) Performance Center revolvers (625PC, 627PC, 325TR & 327TRR8) have all been ~4.5# SA pulls from the factory.

With a little TLC you can easily lighten it. I recently changed the factory rebound spring in all of them to a Wolff 14# (a few I had to cut 1-1.5 coils off), & polished the rebound slide, only. Factory mainsprings. The SA pull changed to ~2.5#.

My Model 629 Light Hunter had a trigger pull so light it would not reliably fire. I tuned it to 9.0 lbs. double action and 3.0 lbs. single action. It has a very pleasing trigger and is TOTALLY reliable, now.
