Default 6" Mod 19 200 Year LAPD Commemorative

Hello - first 'real' post after my intro but my question is with regard to the aforementioned. A LGS has one in the original woodcase with the medallion & blue velvet. The gun is in excellent shape but appears to have been fired but not much. Ok long story short. This gun sat in the shop over a year when I finally decided to see what they would do but as luck has it I went in to start the 'dealing' and it was gone! I was told it was bought back by the original owner. Fast forward about 6 months and it suddenly shows up again - and with the same asking price as before - $899.00 - Ok I have done my research and discovered the Commemorative designation on this model really does nothing for it (not unlike a lot of other 'Commemorative' guns) and I essentially told them this and other than the presentation case (which are selling for about $75 - $95 on Ebay alone) I could not really consider it anything more than a nice Mod 19. Well I offered $600 cash and they countered with $800. I said I would go $700 and no more. They are riding on the 'Coattails' of the Commemorative status and think it adds to the value when my research shows it does not - particularly this one and are holding to the $800 price . I would like opinions from anyone who really knows the value of this particular piece. Thanks!

Compared to the rest of the country, vintage revolvers in Cali do tend to sell for a higher price. If that's where you are. Otherwise, $700 seems more than reasonable for a 6-inch gun.

Thanks - it's actually in Central Oregon where I
Live and revolvers tend to run lower. I may wait a bit and try again but I agree - $700 is where I stop.

Ed---ln the real collector world you will find Blued and Nickel

NIB Model 19s going for much MORE...Usually in the $800-$1200 range

Most serious S&W collectors prefer Standard Models over Commeratives

Well I hate to resurrect my own thread but this gun is still unsold and now marked down to $775 - I am wearing myself out on it but may make another cash offer on it of $600 - they turned down my offer of $700 a few months ago - when it was still at $899.

I wouldn't do it, MrEd.
Who wants scribbling on their gun?
Besides, it was LA city's bicentennial and really not LAPD (a 1780 Jack Webb??? - would have been Spanish Federale or somesuch), anyway, so the badge logo is there for I don't know why.

Fast forward 20 years. I see you making a post here saying:

"I remember 20 years ago, I could have bought a Model 19 for $775 instead of the $2500 they are going for today."

If I have to force myself to like something or rationalize on a price, I let it go. I also don't understand why the retailer is unwilling to cut a deal and make some ready $, instead of allowing it to sit on his shelf for so long. I'd walk away.

Oh i am not 'forcing' myself to like it - I already do - it's just become a challenge for me - as I buy And sell a lot of things and known to drive A very hard bargain. I will get it for what I consider a fair price for a very nice 6" mod 19 excluding its ' commemorative' designation - or will let it go if it comes to that. As far as the 'scribbling' i could do without that but the fact remains it is one of the nicest mod 19s I have seen in a long time.

Personally, I think most "Commemorative" models are marketing BS designed to sucker-in the less-knowledgeable. "Less is more," and the gaudy-upped roll-stamp adds no historical, functional or aesthetic characteristics, and thus detracts. Obviously, if there is some special connection between the buyer and the event being commemorated, it may be a different story, but that is usually not the case.

The shop is waiting for a sucker. Don't be that guy. Just go buy a regular Model 19. There are tons of them out there. You will be happier with the gun and will pay less, too.

Not the most popular commemorative out there...it didn't sell well when it was available at the LAPD Revolver Club, either. The LAPD never issued a .357 and the connection with the city of Los Angeles was kind of weird, too. If I could get it for $600.00 I'd take it though, due to my being an LA cop for 24 years. It doesn't help the price that it was shot.
