I definitely have the "bug" and am attempting to add different barrel lengths to my beginning collection of .44 magnum pistols. I recently saw for sale a 629-4 Mountain Gun and a 629-3, 4" barrel. They are both comparably priced and in about the same condition. The Mountain Gun also has a 4" barrel. I looked closely at the pictures of both guns, but could really not see any differences in the two, other than the Mountain Gun comes with Hogue grips (which could be added the the standard 4" after purchase), and "Mountain Gun" is etched on the barrel. My question is, other than the aesthetics, what is the difference, if any, between the two guns.

I believe the mountain gun has a lighter-profile (tapered) barrel.
That should make it a bit more pleasant to carry, but less pleasant to shoot full-house magnum loads.

For your decision, I would think it would come down to how you plan to use the revolver.

main dif, as mentioned, lighter weight (tapered) barrel.
which I prefer.
ETA:
IIRC, theres only a couple oz. difference between the 2 models.
probably notice more during firing than carrying.
I have both in 629 and prefer the mtn. version.

The Mountain Gun has the standard profile barrel (like the 24,27,28) instead of the 29's bull barrel. Should be a +\- half pound difference in weight. Most importantly, to me, the 629 will have a square butt, where the mountain gun is round.

Actually the weight difference is only 2 or 3 ounces which is negligible IMO....I compared the two several years ago and went with a standard 4 inch Model 29-5.

By the way, my experience has been that the 4" 29-5's and 629-3's are uncommon and harder to find than comparable "Mountain Guns". I don't know why, but when I decided that I wanted the 29-5 with a 4 inch barrel, I spent months looking at auction sites, LGS's, etc; before I found one....during that time I found several 44mag Mountain Gun's.

I have a 629-2 Mountain Revolver. It is harsh with full power loads.

I also have a 3" 629-2 that's ported. It is easier on the hand than the Mountain Revolver.

In any event, the Mountain Gun is really nice and I'd get that based on rarity and finish.

A set of grips that fit you properly will take up most of the sting.

Get both.
