Greetings, all.

I'm new to the forum but have found this site to be an amazing resource for all of my S&W questions over the years.

I'm looking to increase my .357 stable and am on the hunt for a 627 Hunter that apparently Lew Horton distributed. It has the non-fluted cylinder, removable barrel weights and a ported barrel. I'm curious if anyone has an insight into current fair market value of these on today's market.

Also, if you have one available, let me know.

Cheers,
Phil

Welcome CigarPhil!

Not sure if these are the Horton distributed 627s or not...no clue market value. I do know they sure are fun to shoot and stunning to look at...

Good luck in your search...

These are very unique guns, were made for a short period of time, and have features few S&W's have.

Notice the frame. It has the replaceable cylinder stop stud. That's a feature of the old style frame.

Note the hammer. There's no firing pin rivet. This gun has a frame mounted firing pin. That's a feature of S&W's new style frame.

S&W made millions of guns with the old style frame and the old style firing pin. Since 1996 S&W has made millions of guns with the new style frame and the frame mounted firing.

In their entire history, they made only a handful of N-frames with BOTH features of the old style frame and the frame mounted firing pin. Hundreds at most.

That's why this gun is so unique. It's one of the rarest revolvers S&W has ever made.

They most likely are.

I have a 627 PC that should be the "Hunter". It has the early style frame and the later "slab side" barrel. The previous owner contacted Lew Horton about the 627. Their reply was that it was one they had sold, but it has the 5-inch barrel because S&W quit making the 6-inch weighted "Hunter" barrel before the production run was finished. Serial LHVxxxx, product code 170095.

I may letter it to see if it did come this way. If not, I'll TRY to locate a "Hunter" barrel, but will most likely send it to PC and have them convert it to a UDR with fluted cylinder.

Beautiful Guns, we do have a Wanted section of the classifieds for those looking for something special, no guarantees that you will be successful. The 627 of 1989 is a very nice piece as well and likely will cost less going in. They made around 6,000 of those, and it also comes with the model 27s checkered top strap as a very nice touch.

I would be more inclined to "customize" one of those due to there being a supply, and many of those were shot. But those stainless guns can be customized with a bead blast or a polish.

I was bidding on one and lost it. It sold for $3,755. I thought this to be quite unique.
Just a moment...

I have all three of the original M627 8 shot guns, all in s/n 13.
The 5" slender slab version shipped to my dealer in May 1997 while the 6" Hunter was shipped in December of 1997. The 2 5/8" Bloodwork model was a year later, mine was shipped to my dealer in December of 1998.

The original 5" models had fluted cylinders while the 2 5/8" Bloodwork model and the 6" Hunter were unfluted - much to my chagrin - so I had the PC install fluted cylinders in both of mine.

In my opinion they look mo-betta... :)

Very jealous of that 7.5" version...
@SmithNut what is the dimension from the bore centerline to the bottom of the barrel where it meets the frame? A rough dimension would be appreciated.

That top revolver is an 8" gun in the Hunter profile barrel, one of only 2 made in that barrel length I've been told. The one shown here was made for Ernie Vadersen who was the President of the S&W Golf line (the serial number prefix is EJV - Ernies initials). Ernie was nice enough to sell it to me some time back (probably a 2-3 dozen years back), I had it in my collection for some time but when I started downsizing I sold it to another collector (he is a regular on the forum so maybe he will show up to discuss it).

As with all the nice S&W's I've owned this one rates right up there in the "I shouldn't have sold it" category... :(

Since I probably won't be able to find a 7.5" version I'm considering having my gunsmith make that barrel and install it on a 627 frame.
