Seeking info on engraved Model 686
Im seeking info on where this revolver may have been engraved. I am not sure if it would be factory S&W engraving or a third party? Anyone recognize this work? There is no documentation with the revolver. thanks

Looks like one of the models that Altamont has been selling. I have their Model 629 and they currently have a Python available.

The factory used class A to denote "full coverage" engraving down to class C, but this one is about class A to the tenth power! I suspect it is not factory, however.
If you are able to post close up photos of both sides, and both sides of the grip frame with the stocks removed for an engraver's mark, that might help with an ID. Member RKMesa is the local engraved S & W expert and may be along with an opinion.

Does not look factory at all to me either. Kinda went over the top, eh?

Lol, I agree. I bet it's a half pound lighter! Just kidding, OP. I think it looks really neat, but that is a LOT of engraving. It almost makes the gun "disappear", lol.

Thanks guys. I agree it is "over the top" with the engraving. Was offered to me at an estate sale for what I thought was a reasonable price so I took a chance on it. I just wish there had been some documentation with it.

Well I found my answer underneath the grips. Done by B Coffee 8-3-85. Now to find out what this thing would be valued at. Thanks to all who responded to the initial question.

Could be Michael Gouse (Spelling?). Seems comparable to some of his work. I don't know for certain, though.

Super full coverage! It looked at first glance to me like there was frost on the gun

I have to say, that's the most busy amount of engraving that I have ever seen.

Welcome to the FORUM from Michigan! Quite interesting. All that engraving makes it weigh the same as a 4" model. {kidding of course} Bob

In my opinion only, this is done by a very-well accomplished engraver. There are plenty of other folks who know a heck of a lot more than me on the topic...but this has all the 'hallmarks' of an artisan...unless I am missing something.

You ought to PM our engraving collector, RKmesa. He might know of your engraver.
