Joe Kent and I have a gun show buddy who is offering a 6 inch 586 with a Millet rear sight. He'd like to believe the Millet was factory installed. Of course, only a letter would know for sure, but is there anything in the forum knowledge base?

Patridge front sight. Pre-lock. Pre-MIM. Blue cardboard box end label is marked HP. Looks like '80's or early '90's to me. A very nice revolver either way.

Sorry - no pictures, and I wasn't planning to post, so didn't copy serial number etc. The question has been staying with me, and I haven't found any info, so finally decided to share.

Between my dad and I we've owned a wide variety of Model 586's in various engineering changes and I don't ever recall seeing one or hearing of one or reading of one with a factory installed Millet rear sight. A quick review of the SCSW (Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson) does NOT mention a Millet rear sight in the section discussing the Model 586. My guess is that the Millet rear sight is not factory original.

Craig, I'm all but sure the answer is yes. I recall a time in the 80's or 90's seeing advertisement showing a Millet sight and also a Mod 41 showing a Millet. Exactly when and for how long I don't know.

Cannot comment on the 586, but one of the barrels I have for my model 41 has a Millett rear sight.

If you see the box again, write down the product code. A gun with a special sight would have a different product code.

With standard production M586's, guns with white outline rear sights had pc's different from guns with rear black blades. Knowing that, something as substantial as a Millett sight assembly would certainly deem a new unique pc.

BTW, "HP" stood for "High Patridge". There was also a "LP" feature code.

Have you ever seen or heard of a factory Millett sight on a 686?
Or any other Smith Revolver?

Yes, two.

One was called The President's, from 2009. It was a limited edition, partially gold plated, 6-inch, unfluted, M686-5 that was sold only in Europe. Sources say just three (3) were made, product code 149251.

The other was the Gold Tracks limited edition also from 2009. It was a 6-inch, partially gold plated, unfluted, M686-6. I don't know how many were made, at most a handful, product code was 150592.

Both could be described as pimped-out safe queens. Unusual guns, made in tiny numbers, guns you don't see very often.

Thanks all. Our buddy found somebody who liked it -- he sold it.

It was priced right either way. For those tracking mid-Illinois prices, he was asking $700.
