Good evening folks. What do you know about Dan Wesson Model 715H? I saw it at a shop yesterday and I am considering buying it. The stroform box indicates the firearm has a fixed barrel although it does have a knurled nut at the muzzle. The bbl is 6.5 inches and has two ports cut across the top of the rib...the porting appears to be factory. Finish is stainless. The DW web site shows a model 715 but nothing about model 715H. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.

The H denotes heavy. Meaning it has a rib across the top of the barrel shroud. VH would mean it has a vented heavy rib across the top. No V or H means just a plain barrel shroud. The knurled nut means its prolly a very early production gun. Later they changed to a plain slotted nut. B/C should be set to .006". The 2 Dan Wessons I owned were very accurate and reliable. Kinda heavy though. DW always struggled to survive and they did make fixed barrel models for a while. DW's biggest fans were the silhouette crowd and they were one of the very few companys that made a 357maximum revolver. That was a hand & earful of gun.

Since you've been to the DW website, you'll know that CZ bought out DW and is marketing their own 1911 style pistols under the DW brand name. The CZ 1911s are nice, but priced about twice what their worth IMHO. I see DW is producing revolvers again. I hope they have better luck this time.

Something doesn't jive here. First there were four types of barrel shrouds for DW revolvers. 1) Regular - ejector rod shroud but no underlug, solid rib on top. 2) Heavy - Indicated by "H" - a full length underlug and solid rib on top. 3) Vent - Indicated by "V" - upper ventilated rib, no full underlug, just an ejector rod shroud. 4) Vent/Heavy - Indicated by "VH" and had both the full underlug and the ventilated rib.

The knurled barrel nut went away with the advent of the dash two (-2) series and stainless guns (7 series), AFAIK, post dated that change and therefore were never made with the knurled barrel nut. Also DW barrels were 6" not 6.5" and while I believe that some of the later, heavy silhouette calibers may have had some type of factory porting, I don't think the standard .357's did.

Several possibilities - Aftermarket ported barrel & shroud using the old-style knurled barrel nut. Or old barrel with new shroud, using the old style barrel nut (not even sure this is possible - the knurled nut barrel shrouds looked like a pork chop - they were "L" shaped with a vertical leg with a locating stud that went down the front of the frame).

EWK Arms would be the most likely source for aftermarket barrels and shrouds...

EWK Arms

Photographs would help.

Disclaimer: All of the above is from my aging memory so may also not be 100%. I believe there is a DW forum which is probably the best place for questions about this gun.

Good luck.

Adios,

Pizza Bob
