Model 13-4 in .38 Spcl???
Saw this gun today at LGS. Factory marked 13-4 inside crane area, but marked .38 S&W special cartridge on barrel and had what appeared to be shorter cylinder. Factory 90's era uncle mike rubber grips, no box or papers.
WTH is this thing? is it rare?

Not aware of any M13's chambered in 38 Special, but that doesn't mean anything, the factory did all sorts of weird configs over the years. Of course, it could just be a mis-marked M10, that's happened quite a bit as well.
This 2" 38 Special model marked as a M65 was one of my catches a couple dozen years back, turns out it was listed in the factory shipping logs as a M64.... it happens.

It could be a gun someone put together with spare parts.

As you describe it, probably a Brazilian contract gun from the late 1980s. It may even chamber .357 but the people who ordered them didn't need to find that out .

This was really nagging me after I posted above...
Sooo, the nice thing about having a faulty memory is that I'm always re-discovering things...
I just looked at my records, and I did in-fact have two M13's chambered in 38 Special some time back, both were M13-4 units. They were 4" models, purchased in 1996, with the serial number prefix of "BUFxxxx", and my notes say that they were Taiwan Military over-run guns... These were actual 38 special guns, they did not chamber the 357 mag cartridge....
FWIW

Thanks!
Smithnut,
You're right! I got around to checking the Supica-Nahas bible and it lists a 13-4 chambered in .38 special for Thailand. Wonder how collectable these would be

The special order Brazilian guns were L-frame 586s, chambers and marked as 38 Specials. I have a 4", used to have a 6" and there are supposedly 2.5" versions out there but I've never seen one for sale.
There were 200-250 over runs of each barrel length (depending who you listen to).
