J,K,L Frame 9MM Revolvers And Different Grips on 986

I was bad today.

I bought a new Model 986, 2.5 inch Performance Center revolver. I have been wanting one since I first saw them discussed here on the Forum. Finally found one at a semi-decent price.

I bought a 940 sometime back and it has become my every day carry and backup when I work. I found the 547 at a recent gun show.

Now I only need the N frame 929 to round out the 9MM S&W family. This is one that I will never buy as I am not a target shooter, its too big for concealed carry and not suitable for hunting. So I guess I have completed my 9MM set.

986 PC. L Frame

I did not want to start another thread about the 986 so I'll add it here.

I have small hands and short fingers so I usually have to replace grips to fit my hand. As I looked through my accumulation of K/L frame round butt grips these are the ones I found that fit me better. As I was trying them on I took photos and thought I would share.

I just bought a 986, 2.5" barrel about 3 weeks ago. Awesome revolver. I am very pleased with my purchase.

That is a sweet looking L-frame

I probably like it wearing the Pachmayr Compac Professionals or the Hogue Bantams the best. The contrast with the darker grips makes it look all business.

As to the N-frame possibilities, you could rechamber the 929's cylinder to 9x23 Winchester. That would give you the ability to chamber and shoot 9x23 Winchester, 38 Super, 38 ACP, 356TSW, 9x21, 9MM Luger, 380 ACP and more.

If you fit a 357 Magnum cylinder to the same frame you would add the ability to chamber and shoot 357 Magnum, 38 Special, 38 Long Colt and 38 Short Colt as a convertible revolver.

My 627 Pinto is set up this way. The factory supplied stainless cylinder is chambered for 357 Magnum while the second fitted black cylinder has been rechambered to 9x23 Winchester.

Now if you really wanted to round out that 9MM Family, On the K-frame front you look for the 3" Model 547. I like the way the 3" looks obn this firearm

For the little J-frame, there was a 3" Model 940. I did not particularly like it's looks and never purchased one, but I do have a spare 3" barrel on hand . . . . Not sure for what.

My 940s have been re-chambered to 38 Super with that ammunition being the main thing in them now. Obviously they can still shoot 9MM Luger or the other shorter chamberings should I so desire.

Then there is the grand daddy of 9MM based J-frames, the Performance Center 940 Special. I think these guys look cool. Not to mention they are built around the powerful 356TSW cartridge.

The various engineering changes that made this Performance Center offering capable of working with the 356TSW cartridge eventually became the J-magnum frame a few years later (with a slightly longer cylinder window for the 357 Magnum cartridge).

I even ordered a NY Reload holster so I could carry a pair with me.
