I just picked up this 640-1 Pro Series 357 Mag new in box. I was wondering what the reasoning is for the fluted barrel? I am assuming that it is mainly a cosmetic deal. I know they do it on rifle barrels to lighten it up a bit, but I doubt fluting a 2 inch barrel makes it noticeabley lighter. Then I thought maybe it was to help it cool faster, but wouldn't that me it will heat up faster too? I'm not worried about it one way or the other. Just curious is all. It was a good deal so i jumped on it. Seller said he bought it new in 2011 and never fired it with hopes it would increase in value but it didnt so he sold it to me at a loss. I really like that it has night sights on it. A major upgrade from the fixed sights on other s&w J frame DA only revolvers.

On a rifle barrel, it creates more surface area which would help it cool better like the fins on a Thompson Sub-machinegun. It also helps make the barrel stiffer. On the 640 Pro Series, it is purely cosmetic.

I used to pocket carry my old police trade in 640-1, but I traded that off a while back. I wasn't in the market for another one, but i stumbled across this one and it is much nicer.

I brought my 640-1 Pro Series in November
and in my research the fluted barrel is Not cosmetic. The reasons are for reducing heat
weight reduction and the if you look at the underside of the barrel you'll see its slanted to fit in the holster better.

Great buy nate-dogg. I ordered one mid year in 2017. I had an action job performed on it and it is "my favorite" now. As far as I'm concerned it's S&W finest!!!!!
