Default M64 vs. M67? (Fixed vs Adjustable Sights)

All I am sorry if this has been done before, but I figure we can get a current pulse on this topic, which is:

Which do you prefer? The fixed sights on the Model 64 or the adjustable sights on the Model 67? Of course this also applies to any other K-frame line too. I am just asking about the 64/67 as I plan to buy one of them soon but am weighing the pros and cons of each.

So which do you prefer and why?

I was trained on a fixed sight k frame. Model 10/13. I am very comfortable with that platform. When I use a model 19 or 586 I do not enjoy the same confidence level or accuracy. I am always concerned that the sights might be “off”. Fixed sights are virtually indestructible and adjustable sights are not. The rear sight can move or be crushed. I’m never quite sure of my sight picture, as opposed to the fixed variety.
That’s my opinion.

An adjustable rear sight is certainly susceptible to damage where a fixed notch rear sight is not, but this is really a very small concern from a practical standpoint. I've never had an adjustable rear sight "move". I prefer the adjustable sight.

While the fixed sight .38s will usually shoot to point of aim or close to it with 158 grain bullets, they will generally shoot low, sometimes 6" to 8" low with light bullets in the 110 -125 grain range. Also, more than a few fixed sight guns may have a minor windage problem, but often this may be only an inch or two.

As for the comparing sight picture between the two, I guess they are technically different, but the difference is slight enough that transitioning between the two presents no problem. Both work well in this regard.

Never had it happen to me, but our armorer frequently replaced broken adjustable rear sight blades. I'm pretty sure I still have a couple of spares, just in case.

Nice. Have a model 64 just like it that I purchased in 1976. Took it to the range two days ago. In my opinion the best conceal carry k frame. With a good pancake holster you hardly know it is there!

As a rule of thumb fixed sights on guns 3"or less and adjustable on 4'' or more.........

That said I do own 2 1/2 and 3 inch 19s and 66s with adjustable sights and a
4" 681 w/ fixed sights.......

Generally, I prefer fixed sights. All of my home defense guns are fixed. I'm also very partial to the Model 64. Here are a couple of pics. The trigger on the 2 inch model is the best revolver trigger I own. It used to be my Md 681 (also fixed) but the new champ is my Md 64, 2 inch. Maybe someone did some trigger work on it in the past, I don't know, but if they did, I'm happy!

I think it depends on the intended use. Fixed sights have advantages for “social use” as noted above but (taller, more visible) adjustable sights are better for target work for me. The best of both worlds is probably high visibility fixed sights that can be drifted or heights changed as needed.

There, a non-answer to the poll .

didnt vote as you left out the best of both worlds option.
The semi fixed, Durability and simplicity of fixed, with a better sight picture than a receiver groove. With adequate adjustablity to correct point of impact issues.
Like the CS sight and the novak style on the 640 pro.

Semi-fixed? First time I ever heard that term for sights... no matter, this is between the traditional S&W sights.

I'm in the like them equally group. A quick count shows I own an equal number of fixed and adjustable K frames. I do prefer the fixed guns for carry and the adjustables for the range.

Put me down as a big fan of the 2" 64 also. I bought a 64-2 last year because I got a good deal on it, and was surprised by just how good it shoots. It was so good I qualified with it and carry it for work. Up against Glocks and M&P's my Model 64 had the only perfect score. Put a stop to the dinosaur comments for a bit.

In response to your poll question...
(unfortunately there is not a third option)

I voted for the Model 64 with fixed sights as I carry it more often.

I prefer the fixed sights on my 2" Model 64-2 for concealed carry and I prefer the adjustable sights on my 4" Model 67 when target shooting and hunting.

I voted for adjustable sights. Back in the day, my first S&W revolvers had adjustable sights (Mod. 15 &19 with 4" barrels.) I learned to shoot using adjustable sights, and it became my overall preference. When I entered law enforcement, I carried my personally owned 4" 686, or a snubby Mod. 66 when off duty. At that time, my agency had a training program that stressed accuracy and tight patterns to show skill levels. We were rigidly trained to use our sights. Beyond arm's length distance, neither Instinctive, nor Point Shooting were taught by our instructors until much later in my LE career.

Nowadays, I enjoy owning an equal number of fixed sight and adjustable sight revolvers. When it comes to defensive carry, sight configuration doesn't matter much to me today, because I've trained and adopted point shooting out to 12 yards. When I'm shooting at longer ranges, when sights are necessary, however, I prefer an adjustable sight picture for better accuracy. But that's just me. I'm sure some of you fixed sight shooters are highly accurate at medium to long ranges, and would put me to shame in a shooting match.

I voted for adjustable sights. I like the sight picture better, ability to dial in a load instead of dialing the load into the gun. On small concealed carry guns fixed sights have their place. I get it that adjustable sights are more fragile than fixed, but any type of blow that can damage them might well cause something that messes up the gun or its point of impact. In a close up deal where your gun could get slammed or knocked out of you hand by the assailant, sights wouldn't matter much anyway.

I have milled several frames for adjustable sights, a couple of 1917 types and a couple of model 10s on their way to become something I wanted. Probably going to do a refinished I frame 32 S&W.

Part of it is looks. To me the adj sight guns do it for me.

I am glad that for the most part everyone can get what they like. Hey, no right or wrong to it. Just choice.

I fall in the pro-adjustable group. I have several guns with fixed sights but find them more difficult to aim quickly. My ultimate EDCC (every day concealed carry) would have to be my Model 60-4 with its adjustable sights. My favorite fixed sight guns are just harder to see, for me at least. Maybe it’s just my old eyeballs(?)

My first handgun had fixed sights, the first adjustable sight handgun I shot amazed me on how quick it was to line up the sights with it.
I sold my last fixed sight gun several years ago and have no plans to buy another.

I'm sure adj. sights get damaged now and then but I've never seen any, probably because they can be changed easily.
I have seen a few fixed sight guns with bent front sight and or the side of the grove smashed in making it hard to get a good sight picture.

Although most of my K Frames are fixed Model 10-6, 10-7, 10-10 and a 64-5 I think my 2 Model 15-3s are easier for me to shoot well so I had to vote for the adjustable sight models.

So which do you prefer and why?

Depends...........

If it were to be a CCW 2" barrel RB version I'd prefer fixed so they are a low profile and tend not to get snagged. If it was a 4 or 6 inch barreled SB version I would then prefer adjustable sights which are better for target work IMO. Even though the base gun might be the same, I see them for two different purposes - hence the different sight types.

I have a 64 and a 67. Tbe sights on the 67 are way easier to pick up and I shoot the 67 better, but not drastically better.

I do prefer the bull barrel in the 64 over the tapered barrel on the 67.
