Model 520 grip serial numbers
I have several copies of the S&W Model 520, NIB, including a consequtive numbered pair, untouched by human hands. In preparing same for auction, the grips were removed from all copies to ascertain if they were so marked. Each copy had a serial number stamped on the grips but it was different from the serial number for each gun. Why? These guns were received directly from the factory, as I opened the shipping crate myself, and they have not been out of my possession since purchase. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

As I understand it, these guns were accepted by a police agency (forget which one), but returned soon thereafter when the agency decided upon a different weapon, and distributed by Springfield to the civilian market. I'd think it likely that the stocks were removed during a wholesale inspection by agency armorers and reassembled without regard for matching. Just spitballin' here.

Totally normal with this model. We may never know for sure, but I've speculated they had different stocks on them when they were to be shipped but when the order was cancelled, Smith took off the stocks that were to be shipped, still had all the original stocks, but by now too much hassle to match up stocks with guns. That's MY theory and I'm sticking to it!
Hey, maybe we should start a stock number matching service!
