Looks pretty nice to me ... possibly meaning that a 2.75 version might be coming in a year or two. The blued finish on the recent S&W's - I've seen two 586's at the LGS - have been very nice.

They also released a 3" Model 19 Carry Comp. The classic looks to be a round butt, the frame is only exposed about an inch down the grip.

I would guess the 4.25" is a square

However the newly re-introduced Performance Center 3" Model 19 is a round butt

The grip frame of the 4.25" is only visible to about the top of the medallions, from there down the grips cover the entire frame. It would make sense for it to be a round butt because of this.

My first S&W...still my favorite...was losing it's ' sparkle ' so I installed some hand made ( not my hands ) grips on it and it's a brand new gun...thanks to S&W for bringing back a classic...

I paid attention when S&W brought out other “Classic” guns. The 29 and 27 seem closer to the originals. I wondered what would happen to the pricing of the originals. Looks like no impact as far as I can tell. In fact, the prices have continued Northbound. The Classic 19 has a two piece barrel. And isn’t quite as close to the original. I’m guessing the old guns will become even more valuable. I wouldn’t mind having the new model to carry. I’d rather have it confiscated as evidence instead of one of my “old” 19’s or 66’s. In the rare event of me using it. If it got nicked or scratched I wouldn’t feel nearly as bad. Any K is a great gun to shoot. I may buy the 3 inch for myself....

Where did you get the two piece barrel info from?

Default Too Many Flaws

Stainless barrel? Grips that look like plain pressed sawdust? Narrow trigger and hammer, both MIM? Check out the locking bolt recess on the first charge hole past the hammer. It has the dreaded shallow, incomplete ramp scallop cut that leads to bolt bounce and deformity of the locking recesses. It's already happened on the second charge hole out of battery on a brand new photo op gun. Hump backed frame to fit in the IL? Dog leg cylinder stop? Scrape or scratch in the bluing on the left side of the trigger guard (maybe glare)? My limited experience with newer Smiths with EDM cut barrels and MIM lock parts is they are fantastic shooters, better than equivalent old Smiths, but the aesthetics just aren't there. If Smiths had always looked like this we would be on a Colt forum.

I'm just glad to see that Smith & Wesson has enough faith in the revolver market, to take a chance and bring it back. With no real hope of either police or military contracts, they're putting their money in the hands of ordinary handgunners.

In this day of plastic semi's, I for one am glad to see it.

If revolver sales are down, which I don't believe for a second. It's because of people bitching about how things aren't made the same way anymore and refusing to buy the newer guns. News flash people, times change, so do methods and materials. Smith isn't going to return to pinned barrels and recessed chambers, Colt isn't going to start hand fitting Pythons and Royal Bluing guns again, Ruger isn't going to bring back the Security Six. Sounds like a bunch of old farts arguing about the merits of a Studebaker versus a Packard.

I think most everyone would be just fine if the factory returned to producing the era just after the P&R versions.

The point is they aren't going to. It doesn't matter what everyone would be happy with. Those days are over and they aren't coming back.

For me, I'm OK with everything except I have a hard time dealing with the lock.

You can go shopping for a new "classic" S&W today around town and go home with probably 10 or more of them by the end of the day.

They are sitting

Now the no lock new J frames, grab one when you see it. It will be gone within a week or less.

What town? I would love to get one since they are all just sitting unsold. Heck ...I might get two!

My M29-10 Classic is a square butt, so it wouldn't surprise me if the M19 was SB as well.

That said, this is a reissue of one of the most common revolvers ever made. Surely they could have done something interesting like a 2", 2.5", 3", or 5" barrel.

With the current craze for 3" guns, it is incomprehensible that they would "introduce" a gun and not offer a 3" barrel. Yes, I saw the 3" PC M19, but that is a staggeringly hideous gun.

Makes me wonder who their target demographic is for these. Many my age won’t own one with a lock, and many, if not most, younger folks seem to prefer semi-autos. With the REAL “classics” still fairly abundant, where do these fit in? Personally, I don’t need any brand new S&W’s, but I believe having them remain in business certainly enhances our hobby, and I’m sure they’ve done their market research, but it would be fun to know exactly what they’re thinking sometimes. Good shootin’,

If you look at the California Pistol Roster and Blue state Semi-Auto bans guns like these make a lot of sense you do NOT fall into a black gun category and people like us will buy them.

Even though revolver's are selling a lot a revolver revival is happening.

We are in the 2nd coming of the 10mm I believe it now that a GP100 10mm 6 shot exists.

I know guys who wives make their lives with guns a living hell. Guns like these get in the house.

S&W did a great job on the appearance. The blue looks very nice and it mimics the original pretty well. For those that prefer a new gun, this new “classic” will be the ticket. The new “classic” is a looker and should satisfy many. However, if you can get an original 19 for the same or less money, why wouldn’t you?

I hope this doesn't qualify as whining or b1+¢h1ng, but it just strikes me as wrong to simply take an old model number, apply it to a pretty much standard current production "new improved" gun, and call it a "Classic." Kinda like "New Old Fashioned." I guess it's just me, but that seems so very contradictory.

I believe that practice was made famous by Coca Cola.

I'd buy one right now, if it had a scandium frame, titanium cylinder and no lock..

The Model 19 K-Comp looks great -- like a baby 586 L-Comp. I'll bet it even has the problem the 586 L-Comp has -- the Tritium sight vial is very small and thus difficult to see. But that doesn't stop the 586 L-Comp from being a great gun, and I think the Carry Comp 19 will be great too. And, a bit smaller, it will be easier to carry.

I have a 586 L-Comp -- from the first batch of 200 -- and it is superb. It is far and away my most accurately shooting gun. It is like a small rifle.

As for the Model 19 K-Comp, there are tons of grip styles for K/L frames if the smallish Altamonts don't work for the shooter. I have VZ G-10's on my 586 L-Comp, for example, to give me a little more purchase.

Why do I have any semi-autos around here? I should sell two of them and order a Model 19 K-Comp.

The info provided indicates the barrel is stainless which I would guess means it's a 2 piece barrel. Well, at least it's something for those that have always wanted one.

I hope some of the youngins among us buy them because it will help keep the mothership in the revolver business (and in business in general), but it's not for an old fogey like me. I've been spoiled for life by the real thing.

I tried to buy a "Classic" a couple times, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Why buy an imitation when you can still go out and find the real thing?

We youngins (just turned 30) are keeping them in business and this should help too! Let me offer a little insight as to why any of us are buying pistols like this.

I know that an IL and MIM is a deal breaker for the forum guys but the younger and newer crowd who love wheel guns have previously been interested in purchasing stainless, bead blasted or cerakote "working guns". We're not on the forum talking about how S&W has lost it's way and should only make old guns, we're buying the new Model 66's and 69's and using them! The IL (easily disabled) and MIM (we grew up with modern manufacturing practices) don't matter to us! We're just now doing the same for new Miroku Citori's & Remlins (Non JM Marlins).

We buy these due to availability and the reasonable effort to find them in the cities and metro areas that my generation has gravitated too. We work long or odd hours and our jobs don't offer much in the way of time off to look at pawnshops across the country for unicorn no dash pistols. We find our S&W's on the internet and then it's a done deal. We've beat them up backpacking, fishing, hunting, throwing them around in the car on road trips and haven't though twice about it.

Yeah, the stock new S&W trigger pull sucks but we're also the co-oping and DIY generation who made Youtube what it is today. My friends and I have stones, power custom jigs, etc. to fix that.

Now that we (meaning the upcoming generation) are aging into a point where we're buying houses (much later in life than our baby boomer counter parts), we're getting room for reloading and big gunsafes, the appeal of blued "fancy" guns is starting to set in.

Would I love a perfect P&R Model 19? Of course! But I'd rather drop $900 for a new pistol and custom work than drop $1300 on gunbroker.com for a vintage smith of questionable condition.

I just purchased a Model 57 Modern Classic. It has an internal lock, MIM parts, etc. but I don't care. What was more important was that it was a decent price (low $700's) and it was readily available on gunbroker instead of chasing down leads for a more expensive but vintage N Frame .41 Mag. It's a beautiful new gun that I don't mind shooting or customizing. There is no risk of ruining a collector item when I have the barrel cut down to 5" and put a gold bead front on it or so it'll be the perfect N frame for me.

So there you go, good on S&W for making it and yes we'll buy it and no it won't be the same as your pistol from the 60's. It'll be mine from the time in my life when I could get a sweet new gun and have it altered to match me.

Thank you for the "insight"! Unfortunately, you seem to have gotten the impression that I look down on folks buying these new "Classic" revolvers when nothing could be further from the truth. As I said above and reiterate: I hope folks much younger than ancient moi buy lots of them as it will help keep the mothership in the revolver business. Just because they aren't for me personally, don't assume that I think they aren't for anyone. Hardly! Like they say, different strokes for different folks. Enjoy your new "Classic"!

Great move. I hope it drives down the prices on the original Model 19's.

While my old ones look more like genuine classics, the new design features introduced in the 66-8 cured the flaw that took down the K-frame .357 line. Unlike our lovely old 19s, this one can shoot 125 grain magnums all day long and both days on weekends without worrying about its forcing cone.

Oddly I never have owned a 19 with barrel under 6”. After these have been on the market long enough for used ones to be available I might buy a used one. It is safe to say the price will be way below equivalent condition old 19s. I bought an apparently unfired NIB modern Model 10 for what a Bud’s police surplus older 10 would have cost. Believe it or not, my modern 10’s lock hole is not lined with Great White Shark teeth and does not bite off my thumb. I expect these new 19s will also shoot very well.

I don’t shoot my K frames very often for this reason.

Default New vs old.

New Model 19 Classic pros

1- Comes with Smith’s warranty
2- No more cracked forcing cones
3- No stress shooting, if you scratch stocks , wear the blue finish who cares
4- Two piece barrel design
5- Better cylinder locking system
6- New , you know the history, no worries about how previous owner abused it.

New Model 19 Classic Cons

1- Not a Classic
2- No forged parts
3- No pinned barrel
4- No recessed cylinder
5-Has the lock
6- New process bluing and Not so nice stocks
7- Will never be a Classic
I think it’s a win for everyone gives you the choice of owning both old and new and being able to enjoy both.
I love old muscle cars ,Classic Mustangs both Shelby’s and Boss series are my favorite. You can now own both a Classic from the 60’s -70 golden era or the new model Shelby’s and Bosses. The pros and cons are similar to that of the Smith and Wesson new “Classic “ line of revolvers . Choice of old vs new. These are the good old days in that regard.

I think you can see the end of the barrel, in front of the edge of the shroud, at the muzzle, in the one photo. So it appears to be a two piece barrel. [Added later: the Model 19 is two-piece, the Model 19 K-Comp is one-piece].

Which is an idea that takes getting used to, although S&W has been making them since at least 2005 (Mdl 619 and 620). It might be time to accept this feature, which is also used in the new Mdl 66.

Yep, and I'll tell you my 620 is by far and away the best shooting revolver in my gun safes. Blows all the 29's, 28's, 27's,19's, 65's so on and so forth clean out of the water. It's by no means the prettiest revolver, but it's accuracy earned it the job of testing all my .38/.357 handloads.
