Nice! If I were to get another 686 it too would be a 4" model. Was out shooting my 6" 686 today and also have a 2.5" seven shot.

Here's my 3" 686 +. Now, if I could only find a nice shoulder holster, I'll start carrying it concealed.

Any S&W 686 is a world class revolver. No doubt about it. Nice purchase; shoot the heck out of it. This is my 686-4 I've owned since new

shoulder holster
Zebra War Wagon,go to stonerholsters.com and look at their stormer vertical shoulder rig. They have some unique features and are very well made. They are extremely comfortable also.

Here is my wife's gun, a 1982 vintage 4 inch Model 681 with Crimson Trace grips. It's loaded with Remington 125 grain SJHP +P .38 Specials.

I have a no-dash 686 with a 6" barrel that I love to shoot.
I also have a 7-shot 686-6 with a 5" barrel that was a Stocking Dealer Exclusive with less than 400 made in 2003.

Such a delightful gun!
686+ 4"
686+ 3"
I acquired this 3" "just because". It is very well balanced. I am uncertain if I can shoot the 4" better but I'll try again someday soon.
686+ 2.5"
I carried this 2.5" 686 in the feral hog fields, in an El Paso Saddlery shoulder rig. Years alter I acquired the 4" and had a holster made for it:
Dave Workman made this holster for me and it makes the 4" M686+ a pleasure to carry in the field:

Nice guns but to me there is just one problem- they are not blued ! I much prefer blued and never saw the need for stainless. About the only “ modern” S&W I would be interested in is a model 581.

I don't pick or like a gun because its blue, SS or nickle.
I pick it because I like the gun.

I like the looks of a deep blue job with a quality wood grip way better than stainless. My guns get used hard and a blued finish just doesn't hold up. So, most of my guns are SS for practical reasons. They all shoot the same anyway so it's not a big deal.

My first patrol pistol was the 686 in 1985. I will retire this next August and my wife is buying me a new 686 as a gift. I believe the 4 inch barrel is the best looking one of all the barrel lengths. Congratulations on your new baby

Enjoy your new find. Here's mine; I've posted it before. A 686 no dash, with an action job by a S&W trained police armorer, M stamped, Wolfe springs, Executioner grips and a Tyler t-grip. My favorite range gun and one of the last I'd ever part with.

The 686 is the most popular revolver on this forum (according to my completely unscientific survey). I am confident that you will enjoy safely shooting it.

Welcome to the forum. The 4-inch 686 is a fine handgun. Great balance and highly accurate. I have a 6-inch 686+, dash 4. Great guns. Enjoy.

I never thought I would buy a non-blued gun, but I picked up a 686+ 6" because of the 686's reputation, and I have grown to love the SS - it is really beautiful, just different from my old revolver. I moved up to the .357 cartridges yesterday and it was definitely better than skiing and close to ....
Having said that, I could see getting a 586 as well.

This was my first SS handgun.
The person who was looking it over said it had been fired A LOT! The closing of the cylinder is smooth as glass and the groove in the top piece was cut enough to back up that it had been fired a lot. He also felt that it had spend a fair share of its life in a holster.
Together we felt that my brother being an LEO had probably carried this one at one time of another.
Its a 7-shot 686-6 and is also a Stocking Dealer Exclusive with less than 400 being produced.
Being SS had nothing to do with my desire to add it to my tiny collection.
This was my second 686, a no dash brushed SS from 1983. The first time I held it in my hand and SA pulled the trigger I knew it was going home with me.
This one had been shot TONS and was soot black when I first got it with Pachmayr grips. It has a high Patridge front site with a Millet rear sight.
I totally understand why it had been shot soo much - I love shooting it myself.
I do prefer blue and SS over nickle but I would never rule out a gun because of its color.
