M29-5 production question
I have a M29-5 Classic DX 5". The test target date is 1992. The DX came out in 1991, and the 5" bbl came out in 1992, and the DX line was discontinued in 1992. I asked Roy Jinks, about how many 5" pieces were made. He was not able to tell me. Now, if he can't tell me, then this is probably a dumb question, but is there any other way to try to check this out. The 4th edition S&W book says 50% premium for 5", so I get the idea that not so many were made. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I too would like to know the total production of 29-5s in 5" barrel, that weren't DX, just the Classic. And does anyone know what barrel lengths the non-full lug barreled 29-5s came in, and their production numbers. Thanks

No hijacking issue here. I know the DX came I 61/2 & 83/8”. I guess they were full lugbut I can find that out easy enough. I just think that something that came out and went away in the same year is probably scarce? I know I have never seen another or seen one for sale. The place I got mine from had 2 inventory sticker dots on the box. I bought it because I got tired of seeing it in the case for sale

I have seen very few DXs in either blue or stainless, regardless of barrel length. And I agree with your reasoning - you'd think they would be recognized as being pretty rare, and worth a premium.
Watching the auction sites over the years, I've always been surprised at how low the 5" 29-5 with full lug (the Classic, not the DX) sells for. Mine is quite accurate, but I sure dislike the Hogue rubber grips that it came with. After a cylinder full of 320 grain LBTs over a stout (but safe) dose of 296, I have a frame-width red line across my palm. With heavy loads it is like the gun "runs away from" or leaves the grips behind. With lighter loads they're fine.

Mine came with combats and rubber grips and 5 interchangeable front sights. It has only had 12 rounds of factory ammo fired with the combats, and it is a wrist hurter. That is all that has been through it since 95 when I got it

The 5" 29-5 and 629-3 Classic DX guns were only offered for one year-1992. The 29-5 was made in much smaller quantities than the 629-3 5" Classic DX . The 29-5 5" Classic DX is the most rare of all the 29/629 Classic DX and non DX Classic series revolvers. Hard to say how many came out of the factory but I bet it was less than 2/3000. Just a guess.
The non DX 29 Classic Revolvers in 5" as well as 6.5 and 8 3/8" were discontinued after 1996, the final revolvers were 29-6 variants.
The DX line of 29 and 629 Classics was discontinued after 1992 only for the 5" revolvers. 29 and 629 Classic DX revolvers were offered in the other barrels lengths until 1996 (29-6) in blue and early 2000's (629-6) in stainless.
