Pawn Shop S&W's
I don't usually see many S&W revolvers at the local pawn shops. When one shows up it usually has a ridiculous price such as the well used 66 with a rubber grip priced at $799 that I saw a couple of weeks ago. All of the sudden in the last two weeks a half dozen have shown up. I picked up an 8-3/8" 686 no dash for $600 OTD and then a couple of days later found a 4" 686 no dash for $525. I'm saving the money for that one and then on Friday two more showed up. One was a 4" 29-2 that looks like it just needs a good cleaning and the next shop I went to had a 629 Classic DX with a Leupold scope. That one really has my attention.

The pawn shops here usually try to sell S&Ws at absurd premiums, but will give into negotiation and a fistful of cash. I am a big fan of the 686, but to prevent over doing it draw the line at 357 Mag. for more collection. So many nice revolvers so little time and money.

Those are some really excellent prices.
I recently came across a 29-2 in trade that I'm probably going to try and turn into something green or stainless on this forum pretty soon. I was hoping for more than $699 though; oh well! I wouldn't mind making it my new hog hammer!

If that is a 629-3,which it looks like it is because of the grips, you might have trouble finding a rear sight if you ever decide to take the scope base off.
The 29-5 and 629-3 use a unique rear sight that’s kind of a hybrid between the original and current.

Thanks for the info. They were packed when I was in there Friday so I didn't get a chance to handle it. I'll go back next week and see what dash it is.

Same here. In fact most local shops that have essentially any vintage S&Ws are way high in my neck of the woods.

29-2 4"for $ 699.00 WOW!
That is a real bargin if not all rusted and pitted under those rubber grips. A 4" too, much more desirable!

I'd be all over the 29-2. I'm not a huge fan of the original targets anyway, so a nice aftermarket set for around $100 and I'm good to go.
A local FFL sold a mint 29-2 long tube with red-lined box and papers for $1550...and told me about it after the sale! Steep price but there aren't many still out there like that.

The 4" 29-2 is gone. I told someone on our local gun forum that was looking for a 29 about it and he bought it yesterday.
I've got my fingers crossed for this Tue or Wed. In MS police departments are not allowed to destroy confiscated guns. They either keep them or sell them to a FFL. We have a local police supply store that sells police trade-in and confiscated guns. I've bought over a dozen S&W's from them. Stuff like 10's and pre-10's for under $200, 19's for $250-$300, 66's for $300-$350 and 686's for under 450. I was told they have a shipment of confiscated guns (that will include some revolvers) coming in Mon. He said they would have them logged in, priced and out for sale on Tue or Wed.

I don't frequent pawn shops except when something catches my attention in Armslist or other online classifieds, and even then the prices are generally above market due to shop overhead, etc. In December I came across a not-so-easy-to-find square-butt 629-4 with 6" standard barrel (not the full-lug Classic) wearing factory Hogue rubber at a Mesa AZ pawn shop that had been advertised in Armslist. No box but condition and function were near-perfect. I had been looking, nationwide, for a 6" standard barrel 629-3 or -4 for a couple years (no idea why the standard barrel is scarce, btw). It was advertised for $800. I bought it for $700, which may seem high to some of us but given the condition and relative scarcity I consider it a pretty decent buy. Last weekend it shot about 300 rounds of .44 Special in steel games and cleaned up nicely. I'm pleased with my one and only pawn shop purchase.

most of my S&W guns have come from pawn shops as that's been the only way to avoid the built in locking device. my 681 was new, one of my 642s was new, but the rest were trades or pawn shop finds. I have one gun that had a built in locking device but I had it removed and a plug installed. if you know how to check the timing and lock-up and end shake, hammer push off blah blah blah you can find some real deals at a pawn shop. remember that the pawn shop gave the poor sap about one quarter the value of the gun so you have some real negotiating room when you see a used one.

I have to ask why you did not jump on that 29-2 at that price as soon as you discovered it.Just curious.

Unfortunately I have limits to my gun fund. I was short several hundred dollars since it was the end of the month.

In my opinion, better deals could be had at pawn shops on almost all items prior to the age of the internet.
