Model 17-8 (in .22lr 10 rounds) versus 617 (in .22lr 10 rounds)
Wondering if folks here can offer any thoughts or guidance on the relative merits or trade-offs between a S&W Model 17-8 in .22lr 10 rounds capacity) and the latest Model 617 in .22lr (10 rounds capacity). I’m in the market for a .22lr revolver for target practice/plinking, and was all set to get a 617 when I saw the old 17-8 on offer (used but in excellent condition). The 17-8 is around $1100 the 617 is available for around $700.
Thoughts?

If you just want a great S&W .22 revolver for "practice/plinking" I'd buy a current model 617. If you're planning to build a collection then the 17-8 might be your choice as they're not seen very often. If all you want is one to shoot that will be reliable and accurate go with the 617.

Accuracy and reliability and function will be no difference between either the 17-8 or 617. Ease of keeping clean the 617 is better, less likely to show noticeable wear, the 617 would be better. To me, the classier is the 17. It is just a matter of personal choice otherwise.

The 617 would be my choice also for the use you want, I have 3 of them and I have yet to see a 17 in a ten shot at the guns shops I frequent, that's why the extra cost, more rare. I like both 4 and 6 inch models but the 4 inch has better balance and the 4 inch seems to be harder to find also.
