586 no dash
My nephew had a 586 no dash in his collection that he hardly ever used. We worked out a trade and now I'm the owner of a very nice 4" 586. The box and some paperwork were included in the trade. It has not had the S&W modification and I doubt I will send it in. I did a rebound spring swap and lightened the mainspring slightly and the gun is a s smooth as silk. I just went to the range and the gun shoots great too. Shot just 18 rounds of .38 special and 10 magnum rounds with no cylinder binding in the very limited testing

Very nice. I have a 586 6" but I love the 4". It just looks so natural.

Great guns, I have both 586's and 686's in 2-1/2", 4" and 6" bbls.
Like many others (including myself), you'll likely not encounter any cylinder binding issues.
The ammo issues for the recall was a very specific combination of soft primers (Federal), light weight bullets (110 gr.) loaded to high velocities.
Standard ammo loadings will pose no issues.

My 586 no dash never went back for the mod and I really see no reason to do so, I don't shoot really hot ammo in it anyway.

Which rebound spring did you use and is the mainspring lightened by the screw adjustment or did you change it to a lighter spring.
Thanks

Really nice 586. Mine is below. I had to change the factory grips as they were "no bueno" with full magnum rounds.
Mine had gone back to the factory for the fix. I guess if yours will be a range gun only, then it doesn't matter. But if you intend to use it for any serious purposes, why not get S&W to fix it for free?

The 586 4". Just small enough, while also just big enough. Probably why everyone has one, or wants one.

You'll love your 586 4". They are very well balanced and very accurate. My 586 no-dash had very few rounds through it and only got smoother through use. Mine only see's cast bullets and loves them! Enjoy it!

They are great pistols. I have the 6" and 8 3/8" in both 5/686. Looking for the 2.5 and 4" of each but no one wants to give them up ! Or if they do they are looking for a kings ransom.

OP - Nice find on an excellent gun. I think S&W hit the "sweet spot" in .357's with the 4 inch L frame.
My no dash 4 inch 586 was purchased when they were first introduced. Pictured when new, it aint so pretty now, but I carried it as my duty weapon for years, and it has tens of thousands of rounds thru it, including a lot of PPC use. Just as smooth, accurate, and reliable as it always was. I never sent it back for the update, as I never had an issue with it binding, and that included a lot of issue Remington 125 SJHP, and warm reloaded 158 jacketed and SWC magnum reloads.

I had bought a Wilson spring kit that came with a 12 lb a 13 lb and 14 lb rebound spring in the kit and a reduced power mainspring. I used the 12 lb rebound spring and the reduced power mainspring in my 19-4. So I put the 13 lb'er in my 586 and backed off of the mainspring a bit. Got positive ignition at the range and have never had an issue with backing off of the spring in several other revolvers I have. The gun will likely only see range use and probably very few magnum loads in it's future. I also have a 686 4" with the mod if I need to shoot some magnum ammo. It's action has also been tuned up and it is as slick as butter
