In my neck of the woods....prices are going from low $600's up to $1300 on armslist and at pawn shops. Haven't been to a gun show in ages so don't know what's going on at those.

Last month in Reno I saw a nice 4” dash 3 for $595. Should have snagged it.

I recently purchased a 3" 686+ dlx for $780.00. It came with nice looking wood grips that didn't fit my hand so I put on a pair of Pachymars Legend's. Stock grips are on feebay.

Funny this thread came up. I took my 686 no-dash out earlier today because I had the receipt in the bag. Perfect condition, all original and tight as a vault! Bought at a pawnshop exactly one year ago. It was marked 699. I got it for 560+tax. Dang, I need to go shoot it! That's why I took her out. I haven't even put one round through her yet.
ETA: It's a 6 inch with origional wood stocks and has the pinned front sight with a Patridge low sight.

Here is mine, a no dash. I've had it since it was an infant. Not for sale, it's was just dressed up in the Sunday grips to have it's picture taken. Single action trigger: 2.5#, double action trigger: 7#.
Have a blessed day,
Leon

Just got a new one yesterday! Was 900 delivered but that's not too bad in todays climate and it's the exact model I wanted! The DA trigger is damn heavy! Already have a lock delete kit coming and will let a gunsmith install it and work the trigger at the same time. I'm beyond excited to shoot it. Love the non-fluted cylinder!

That seems like a don't want to sell it, but I will if someone is willing to buy it price. I recently paid 150 less for for a Nickle 4" and I bought a Nickle ANIB 6" a couple of years ago for 750 shipped. The prices on these guns are going up but those prices are optimistic. I knowingly paid a bit of a premium for both mentioned due to the Nickle finish, since it is less common and nice to look at.

I see a chain store ad for a lock 586 for $1k.
I dont know why, in my area, when I've seen some 586's sell, they want alot of money for them.
So, last year, or-the year before, I jumped on the only 586 I ever bought for $680. And havent seen one that low since.
But now these times have interesting gun prices. ...

It always amazes me how some of you guys keep such close track of when, where and for how much you bought these guns. I know what I've got, maybe remember where it came from and can vaguely remember what some of them cost.
Nice guns, in any event.

In 2014, I found a LNIB 6-inch 686-4/Plus at my LGS for $575. I jumped on it. I'd been looking for a 4-inch model like the one I carried when I first got into LE. Now, I'm hoping for similar luck in finding a 4-inch pre-lock 586 in excellent condition.

686 Prices
Maybe I overpaid, maybe I bought too soon, but the truth is I wouldn’t take the same money for either of them, both great shooters.
686-1 Snub with Factory Combats $850
686-5 4” Mountain Gun with 3 sets of grips and a leather holster $865
Both within the past year. The Mountain Gun is absolutely the best shooting revolver I own. Just put the Raptor and CT on for hunting, but haven’t been yet due to a bum knee.
No matter what you paid, you’ll likely love the 686! So what are you waiting for? Go buy one already, or two, or...

I was offered $800 last month, for my 686-4 that I've owned since 1998. Ain't going anywhere except, like posted above, to the range. But to the OPs question, a good place to get a "feel" for prices is Guns International or Gun Broker.

Some good looking examples in this thread.
Mine is just a plain old, garden variety 4” 686-6+
She’s an absolute tack driver. Even with the lock, I wouldn’t take a grand for her.

Got my 686-Plus 3-5-7 this past Spring locally for $740 OTD. I, too, like that unfluted-barrel. I just changed the sights to Cylinder-and-Slide fixed.

I keep a spreadsheet of prices paid and current value. I haven't kept the date purchased. I note, the price, model, serial number and information about the item such as barrel length, presentation box tools, special grips etc. I started doing it for insurance, so if they were stolen or damaged I would have something to work from. I am working on cataloguing them with pics as well to prove up condition.

All used 686’s I have seen in the couple of years have been priced like pre-locks. I don’t think most people know the difference. I certainly don’t see a Pre-lock bring much of a premium, if any.
I wanted to scope a 6” 686, but didn’t want to Bubba up any of my Pre-locks. In January I could buy a new 6” 686 from GAG for $664. All the used ones I saw were priced more that that. I even tried to trade a Pre-Lock 66 for a Post-Lock 686 made after 94 (factory tapped), and couldn’t get any takers.
BTW… today that 686 that was $664 in January is $729.99 with the same MSRP. But of course, no one has any. So I’m going today to pick up the 6.5” 610 I did manage to find for my project.

I was so desperate to get a 686 again, the lock didn’t matter to me. I’m also not a fan of the MIM parts. Found a 4” - 686-6 in basically mint condition with the lock and MIM parts. I have to say the cylinder lock up and trigger is superior to the two pre-lock 586’s I had. I was pleasantly surprised how precise they have become verses the older ones that have more hand fitting.

I bought a 686-5 7-shooter today, 2.5" barrel, original Hogue monogrip, in the box for $700...The guy wouldn't come a nickel off his price, and I knew there were others standing in line to buy it, I was just the one who asked first "what's in the box?"... ...Ben

Bought mine Nov 2, '91 (I have original receipt in the box). A dash 3. $319.99 from B&E Guns in Cypress, CA. Long story short, the gun was practically in a time capsule for decades (jobs, college, moving, family).
I did wear it in a shoulder holster during the Rodney King riots in SoCal. I was escorting gasoline delivery trucks to certain gas station in South Central LA.

A friend bought a 4" -1 a couple of weeks ago that was in a local shop on consignment. $849 firm plus tax and background check fee
And just to play along here's my no dash my late dad bought in Sept. 1981 for just over $281 out the door with a cleaning kit and a box of ammo (I have the receipt) in Tucson at a now out of business shop.

I don’t know what the prices of Pre-Locks is doing right now, but I would guess they are more than a new 686.
Since January S&W raised the MSRP $20 or 2.4% (that happened in the last couple of weeks) on a plain 6” S&W 686 (164224) During that same time GAG has increased the price $188 or 28.27% to $853.00 or MSRP.
I’m not picking on GAG; they are the main one I was tracking, as they have had the best prices until now.
Most reputable places don’t mess with the price if they don’t have the gun in stock. Some less reputable places list a much lower price when they don’t have them, and then raise it when they do. Some don’t list a price if they don’t have the gun.
Maybe GAG has decided to list MSRP on guns they don’t have and will price them accordingly when they are available; I don’t know.
I tried to trade a pre-lock 66-2 for a post-lock 686 that was factory tapped and didn’t have any luck at all.

The longer barreled guns are not really a good metric to gauge pricing trends. The longer barreled guns have always been less desirable than shorter barreled guns of the same make.
Snubs worth more than 4" guns, 4" guns worth more than 6" guns and so on. 850 is a good price for any pre lock 686 though, with Guns.com having one listed in box for 1400 bucks.

I have 2......a no dash and dash 5. Both were $500. Bought the dash 5 last year as a police trade in and I’m leaving it as a truck gun. The no dash I had the performance center bead blast it and do their combat revolver package. It isn’t going anywhere......

I know you're looking for older versions, but I just bought a new 686+ yesterday for $850. I really wanted a seven shot, I don't think there are pre-lock options for that. Figured I better get it now. So I bought the first, and only, one I could find.

Pre-March prices are about irrelevant. In Houston today any full size 357 S&W revolver is at least $900 for a shooter with no box papers etc.

The -4 was available in the 7 shot, no lock configuration.

$700 for a nearly pristine 6” no dash, just last week. Had Hogues on it, but I had a nice set of appropriate targets to make it whole again.
Local gun store. The owner likes to keep it sane.

In 1992 bought a 6” 686-3 new for a little over $300 that i thought was high. In 2017 bought a 99% 4” 686 nd with original stocks for $575 that i thought was high. 2018 bought a nib 4” 686-3 for $750 thought was high. Last week bought a 99% 2 1/2” 686-4 in the box for $1000 that you guessed it thought was high. I still have them all and glad i bought them when i did. No telling what one will cost 20 years from now.

Gun show today. Dealer wanted $1200 for a used 6 inch lock 629. Insane. Right now Smith revolvers are in Flux.
