686 prices

Just got a new one yesterday! Was 900 delivered but that's not too bad in todays climate and it's the exact model I wanted! The DA trigger is damn heavy! Already have a lock delete kit coming and will let a gunsmith install it and work the trigger at the same time. I'm beyond excited to shoot it. Love the non-fluted cylinder!

A few 686s with locks
2 586 4 inch pre lock blue 950 Medina Gun Show

That seems like a don't want to sell it, but I will if someone is willing to buy it price. I recently paid 150 less for for a Nickle 4" and I bought a Nickle ANIB 6" a couple of years ago for 750 shipped. The prices on these guns are going up but those prices are optimistic. I knowingly paid a bit of a premium for both mentioned due to the Nickle finish, since it is less common and nice to look at.

I see a chain store ad for a lock 586 for $1k.
I dont know why, in my area, when I've seen some 586's sell, they want alot of money for them.
So, last year, or-the year before, I jumped on the only 586 I ever bought for $680. And havent seen one that low since.

But now these times have interesting gun prices. ...

It always amazes me how some of you guys keep such close track of when, where and for how much you bought these guns. I know what I've got, maybe remember where it came from and can vaguely remember what some of them cost.

Nice guns, in any event.

Well the S&W 686, 686 +, 586 pre-lock will always carry a premium price tag, even more as time moves on. If you see one, and you have the coins, lay your money down and be glad.

Bought in 2005 for $350. Seattle WA

Bought in 2006 for $599. With lock and the 'Plug' installed Seattle WA

Bought in 1996 for $299. Seattle WA

Bought in 2019 for $699. Seattle WA

Bought in 1996 for $399. Seattle WA

Bought in 2017 for $500. Seattle WA

Bought in 2016 for $900. Lock with the 'Plug' installed Seattle WA

In 2014, I found a LNIB 6-inch 686-4/Plus at my LGS for $575. I jumped on it. I'd been looking for a 4-inch model like the one I carried when I first got into LE. Now, I'm hoping for similar luck in finding a 4-inch pre-lock 586 in excellent condition.

686 Prices

Maybe I overpaid, maybe I bought too soon, but the truth is I wouldn’t take the same money for either of them, both great shooters.

686-1 Snub with Factory Combats $850

686-5 4” Mountain Gun with 3 sets of grips and a leather holster $865

Both within the past year. The Mountain Gun is absolutely the best shooting revolver I own. Just put the Raptor and CT on for hunting, but haven’t been yet due to a bum knee.

No matter what you paid, you’ll likely love the 686! So what are you waiting for? Go buy one already, or two, or...

Some good looking examples in this thread.

Mine is just a plain old, garden variety 4” 686-6+

She’s an absolute tack driver. Even with the lock, I wouldn’t take a grand for her.

Nice guns, in any event.

I keep a spreadsheet of prices paid and current value. I haven't kept the date purchased. I note, the price, model, serial number and information about the item such as barrel length, presentation box tools, special grips etc. I started doing it for insurance, so if they were stolen or damaged I would have something to work from. I am working on cataloguing them with pics as well to prove up condition.

Did anyone attend any gun shows this weekend ?
If you can report on pricing that you seen i’m sure a lot of us are interested thanks

All used 686’s I have seen in the couple of years have been priced like pre-locks. I don’t think most people know the difference. I certainly don’t see a Pre-lock bring much of a premium, if any.

I wanted to scope a 6” 686, but didn’t want to Bubba up any of my Pre-locks. In January I could buy a new 6” 686 from GAG for $664. All the used ones I saw were priced more that that. I even tried to trade a Pre-Lock 66 for a Post-Lock 686 made after 94 (factory tapped), and couldn’t get any takers.

BTW… today that 686 that was $664 in January is $729.99 with the same MSRP. But of course, no one has any. So I’m going today to pick up the 6.5” 610 I did manage to find for my project. :D

I was so desperate to get a 686 again, the lock didn’t matter to me. I’m also not a fan of the MIM parts. Found a 4” - 686-6 in basically mint condition with the lock and MIM parts. I have to say the cylinder lock up and trigger is superior to the two pre-lock 586’s I had. I was pleasantly surprised how precise they have become verses the older ones that have more hand fitting.

I bought a 686-5 7-shooter today, 2.5" barrel, original Hogue monogrip, in the box for $700...The guy wouldn't come a nickel off his price, and I knew there were others standing in line to buy it, I was just the one who asked first "what's in the box?"...:p...Ben

Bought mine Nov 2, '91 (I have original receipt in the box). A dash 3. $319.99 from B&E Guns in Cypress, CA. Long story short, the gun was practically in a time capsule for decades (jobs, college, moving, family).

I did wear it in a shoulder holster during the Rodney King riots in SoCal. I was escorting gasoline delivery trucks to certain gas station in South Central LA.
