My only L frame S&W
This is how my 1983 M-686 came to me and this was even after my first attempt to clean it, the most filthy gun I ever acquired.
I want to thank Kernel Crittenden for braking down this label for me. I always appreciated everything that he did for soo many members.
"686 6”
Wow. That's a great old label. It's the type seen on very early 1-piece boxes. Notice it has no 4-digit Spec. Ord. number, 6-digit Product Code, or computer bar code.
Based on the serial number it likely shipped in....
March - August of 1983.
The gun is marked with a "M", so it has had the factory modification - a new firing pin and frame bushing. The old style 10-digit Product Code, 6860096035, and feature codes, mean:
6860 - model number and dash number.
09 - brushed stainless finish.
60 - six inch barrel.
03 - square butt frame.
5 -? (I haven't figured this one out yet).
TS - wood Target Stocks.
HP - High Patridge front sight.
S - Stainless.
The rear sight looks like an aftermarket Millett. Those aren't original. The price tags are pretty cool.
The gun has a adjustable trigger overtravel stop. That little piece of metal peaking out behind the trigger. It's adjusted by removing the sideplate and loosening a screw that allows the stop to cam forward and back."
The Millet rear sight. I beleive that my brother used this one in silhouette competitions.
First time at the range. 29 of 50 from 100 ft.
2nd trip to the range. 40 of 50, that's pretty good for me.
I don't have the original Target Stocks so picked these out for it.
This one is another one of my keepers.

Well, a couple of questions:
- SA or DA at 100ft ?
- Have you checked and measured the B/C gap, and what is it?
And BTW, looks like a great find...

I have 2 L-frames , both did duty for LEO's . I have a 681 , 4" and a 686 , 4" . The 681 did time " down under " either with Australia or New Zealand law enforcement . I have been told both . My 686 was carried by a guy in off shore boat patrol , working narcotics . I have no plans to sell either , great guns . Regards Paul

DA at 100 ft. I am by no means a tack driver.
Nope never checked the B/C gap. I don't even know what that is.
DA I'm pretty sure that it takes less then 100th of an ounce of pressure to pull the trigger.

This is my 66-1. I use a few different items to clean them depending on their finish.
I start with Hoppes 9, a brass brush and brass wool.
The Birchwood lead removal cloth does a great job but it takes time.

I had two of the Model 686 revolvers, a 6” no dash and a 4”, -1. Used both in competition. They kept me in the top of my tier. Tried the 4” on duty. After a out two weeks, back to the K frame.
Sold both of them a long time ago.

My brother competed a lot over the years.
I remember him telling me that he and three other deputies traveled to a neighboring state to compete in a competition with other law enforcement agencies.
He said that he took 1st place in the revolvers and 3rd with the semi-auto.
I don't know which of his guns that he used although this 686 could have very well been the revolver that he did use.
I had a LNIB 4" and a 5" Stocking Dealer Exclusive, that I wish I had kept but I sold both of them.

Kenny,
We can not keep them all. The best we can hope for is the next caretaker is respectful and cares for them well.
