Default "K" frame Smiths

Usually my favorite handgun is my latest purchase as I am more of an accumulator and shooter than a collector. However, I believe my latest purchase will be my favorite for a long time. Really enjoy Pre-17 and Model 17's as I have several. Last week I found this 17-6 (BDS 37xx), six inch, with a full length lug. The LGS is very knowledgeable and knows the previous owner well and believes the revolver was ordered from Smith in the current condition. I am not so sure as I have never seen this type of trigger and Cylinder Latch before. Shot it today and it has a very smooth trigger in both SA and DA. Really going to enjoy this one.

Both the release thumbpiece latch and trigger stop look like aftermarket add-ons to me. The fancy latch would be pretty simple to screw on. The trigger now has two backlash adjustment stops, the internal one in the frame (still visible) and the set screw drilled through the trigger. That must have been a lot of fun on a small case hardened part. I don't know S&W factory lore very well, but it doesn't seem likely to me that S&W would do this. It is a nice M-17.

I had one of these that I bought used but which was in excellent condition. Mine had the regular square release, no overtravel stop on the trigger, and though it came with the same Hogue grips, I believe left the factory with the target style grip with the finger grooves.

I am confident your 17-6 did not come from the factory in that configuration. I have 4 and 6 inch 17-6s, they are definitely two of my favorites. All the full lug 17-6s came with wood combats and the traditional cylinder release; someone changed out your grips with Hogues and cylinder release with one from Ed Brown. The Ed Brown cylinder releases are very desirable, but were discontinued years ago. Here’s one on my 627-5. They can go for upwards of $100. I have 3 of them if anyone is interested.

Thanks for all of the replies. You have all confirmed what I expected to hear. Does anyone have an idea who made the trigger?

I can't tell, but usually one just removes the factory trigger and drills and taps it.

Default Mother Ship

I have been strongly considering it as it would be good to know for sure the original configuration. Have certainly spent $100 on less worth while things.

Spend most of my money on firearms and beer...........the rest I just waste.
