642 clear coat removal ?
How are you guys removing the pealing clear coat on the 642’s? My friend needs to get his off and just put a coat of Ballistol on the gun.

The ClearKote on my 342 peeled off when I applied GunScrubber prior to cleaning. I wasn't trying to remove it, just happened. My similar vintage 337 had no such problem, nor do any of my other lightweight snubs.

Yep. Gunscrubber or brake cleaner takes it right off. The clear coat Smith and Wesson uses is a mistake that they have been repeating for nearly 20 years. I never used gunscrubber on my 642 and the clear coat peeled twice. They refinished both times but said they wouldn’t do it any more. They said not to clean it with ANYTHING but standard gun oil because even just using solvent on the bore or chambers would mean some got in the rest of the gun.

Ed's Red Bore Cleaner w/ acetone or simply acetone ...
what ever that "piss poor excuse of a finish " is comes right off .
Auto Brake cleaner or Carb. cleaner should also remove it .
Honestly I think it's just a clear enamel or lacquer type paint and wears right off the high spots .
I clean my latest J-Airweight with WD40 which isn't much of a cleaner but it doesn't take off the clear paint .

But there are obviously variations in the composition of this finish as my other lightweights have not suffered finish peeling. Since GunScrubber has not affected any other gun, I've stopped thinking about the issue.

Yes have many j frame The most biggest pain in the but is my old 642 from the 90s. The clearcoat on there was peeling off real bad and yes I use gun scrubber. I was in the driveway after I got home from the range and shot it with some gun scrubber and finished it off the rest of the finish came right off. Problem solved called up Metal life in Pennsylvania gun refinishing was going to do a nickel finish on it but the owner Ron Makowsky from Metal life told me he can even hard chrome aluminum frames that’s what I did problem solved.
