Bought the "useless" snubby..
A friend dropped by my shop to pick up his vehicle and oh by the way Paul (our local gun shop owner) has a .44 magnum on the shelf...it's a 629...snubby. "What a useless gun."
"Does it have the "lock?'
"Nope."
No other details..other than it's priced at $1200. Hmm..don't really "need" another .44 magnum..but...older 629 snubby at that price may be worth a look. The next morning I'm off to Pauls.
Turned out to be a 629-4...so last of the forged parts models. No box..looks to have been stored mostly. No budging on price. Trigger feels stock weight and smooth. One little ding on the RH side..just under the address.
I could not walk out without it. It really has a nice balance and will see how the little hand cannon does later today.
Such a silly little useless snubby...

Bravo! I love the 3" 629 (have one). Enjoy it. You've got the right grips on it already, too.

I prolly would've bit on that one, too. Far from useless, it will make a great
.44 Special packin' revolver.

Well,,,, if it's really so useless sent it this way and I will send You a totally useless Taurus Tracker is 22LR. I used Mine to shoot the Magnum Handgun match at My gun club a few times. It is amazing how accurate those little useless guns can be at 100 yards with magnum loads. It's really fun when You outshoot the Guys with the long barreled guns.

You could have done much worse, you could have bought a Governor, now that's useless!
But seriously, the only folks who call big bore snubbies useless are those who can't handle their recoil and feel self-conscious about it, so they do the only thing that they can to salvage their shattered pride by never missing an opportunity to assert that nobody can ever possibly make good use of one if they can't, not unless they're a knuckle-dragging Neanderthal, anyway.

About the only way you can get a nice 44 spl. these days is to buy a 629.

2.5”-3” Smiths do nothing but go up in value. Keep the specials in it and you’ve got a manageable/shootable big bore. Should be fun!

I got one of those useless snubbies in .41 mag, made by Taurus which in my view is near as good as a Smith without the hefty price. The bbl is ported which makes it manageable.

You are going to be glad you reeled that one in!! I don't shoot many magnums in mine, but I really like a medium load. I use 6.2 grains of Trail Boss and a 200 grain bullet for some nice shooting!
And by the way, I think that is a pretty reasonable price in today's world.

Congrats, nice gun.
You can be pretty sure it hasn't been shot much with full-house loads.
Doable for sure, but for me at least, my enjoyment starts fading after a cylinder or two of full-power magnum loads.
These are perfect guns for woods-walking, exploring, etc...when you want serious firepower at hand for whatever might come your way.

Even has the black powder bevel on the cylinder face!
I had a 3" 629-2 MADE for me using an original LH 3" barrel.
Trust me when I say, I have proven that even out to 100 yards, it's far from useless.
What it is, is a very good woods companion.
Mine is pictured above.
