So how did I do in my M29 hunt?

From a previous post I was asking what I should know about when it came to the M29. From that post I used a lot of the advice and went in search for my new to me gun. I luckily found this beautiful 1989 M29-5 Classic Hunter with an 8 3/8" barrel, full underlug, pristine forcing cone and unfluted cylinder. It is one of only 2500 that S&W made in this configuration. Pretty happy! Though I'm sure I overpaid some for it. Who knows though. So how did I do?

Beautiful revolver, and I bet it's going to be a real shooter. I have the 6 inch 629 version, and it is a favorite. If that 29 was mine, the only thing I might do is replace the front sight blade with a Patridge version, since it is more of a hunting and range gun than a concealed carry, quick draw combat weapon.

Can you handgun hunt whitetails in Mass.? If so, that would be the ticket.

Classic Hunters

Well done Rockriver1.

I too enjoy an S&W Classic Hunter, although mine is a 629 and has the 6 1/2" barrel. They are great revolvers and certainly uphold S&W's reputation for solid steel and accuracy.

I'd say ya done good. I do love the long tube 44s. That full underlug barrel does get heavy after a few rounds but does a great job absorbing recoil.
Be careful with those. They can be addicting. Ask me how I know..

I don't care how heavy or long the bbl. is. That is a beautiful revolver and I am sure you are very proud to own something as desirable and collectable as this revolver is. Congratulations!

If you’re happy, that’s all that counts!

I wouldn’t buy that gun, unless I could get it for a low enough price to flip it quickly and make a few hundred $.

To me, handguns must be handy: the long barrel, full length under lug and non fluted cylinder just add weight and bulk and make an unhandy gun.

As a range toy, something you carry from your car to the range, it’s okay. It’s not something I’d try to carry in the field.

The 29-5 incorporates the complete “endurance package” improvements. It’s high on my list of the best 29s for actual shooting, as opposed to just looking at. Any 29 will do in the nice to look at department. ;)

Sure, that one is going to be heavy. I have a similar one, with fluted cylinder. The cylinder also has what might be called a “black powder chamfer,” which I happen to think S&W did a very nice job of and I like the looks. It would be too much for me to try to wear on a belt, but I could probably handle it (for eastern hunting) in a chest holster. It should shoot like a little rifle. Mine does. Congratulations on your new .44. :)

Entire state of Mass is shotguns only.

That is beautiful!

That sure looks like a really LONNNNG barrel with the under lug !!

Nice find and if you shoot it at the range a picture of a target would be enjoyed.

100 yards ?

Enjoy.

2lbs Hammer

You asked how you did. Based on the Picture it is
a “well taken care of” S&W. Price wise you didn’t
say what you paid.

I like it. I also bet by that long sight radius it will
be very accurate. As for carrying it around the
Farm and Hunting, I would just use a Soft Sided
Pistol case. It’s not like it’s a Fast Draw contest
out there.

Please give a Range Report when you shoot it.
The Best to you and your Endeavors.

P.S. I have never Scoped a Revolver, and as
accurate as it will be, that’s a good candidate.

Sweet!

Unfortunately for me, I can't handle the longer barrels anymore.
