I would like to mount a scope on a 629-1 which is not drilled and tapped from the factory. Short of drilling and tapping, is there a way to mount a scope.
I debated the drill/tap to the old 8.375" K22M but that was the best option for scope/red dot.
Most often it's irons but just wanted to see how accurate it really was.
Drill it. Tap it. Enjoy it. If you have a skilled smith do the work he won't have to drill completely through the top strap. This way if you want to go back the holes don't show once the rear sight is reinstalled.
My advise is to buy the mount for a drilled N-frame, then have your gunsmith drill & tap to that pattern, I suggest all the way through to handle the recoil.
Put your factory rear sight in the gun's box, I have lost track of mine. (29 Classic 8 3/8")
Agree, drill and tap is the only way to go, especially on a high-recoil revolver.
I ordered one of those "no drill" mounts.
After studying it, I trashed it and did the right thing.
Do it once, do it right.
I have a Weaver and a Burris no drill mounts that work great and hold zero on K frames with loads up to +P 38spl. Any load heavier will eventually start moving after 25-30 rounds depending on how hot they are loaded. Tried a B Square on a 629. Pretty much same results. Worked good with 45spl but 44mag would shake loose. I’d certainly recommend drill and tap for 44mag and use BLUE Locktite.
I drilled and tapped an N frame M29 and you do need to go all the way through it with the tap.
The tap is tapered and you must really go through most of it to make the new threads.
So if your going to do the 3 holes, its best to have them tapped all the way through.
Especially a 44 mag.
