I am brand new to this site, so please forgive me for what might seem like basic questions. Is $1200 a fair price for a 29-5, gun only, no box or papers? I am not a gunsmith but it appears to be in very good condition. I am kind of leaning towards the -5 over a -3 mainly because of the endurance package. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I agree that it is the next in line to have after the dash 2 and earlier versions. Not a fan of the logo being on left side and the non roll crimped ejector rod shroud.

I have heard it said that the dash 5 was when S&W was at the top of their game. I also believe it was the first model drilled and tapped for a scope mount.

As for the 1200.00 being right, can't really say without a picture and more description of the finish. Original grips?

The 29-5 is the pinnacle of the model 29 engineering; it has everything you want and nothing you don’t. However, if you remove the rear sight to mount an optic don’t lose it, they are next to impossible to find. The -5 uses an oddball rear sight base.

29-5 "Classic" 5" is the exception!

$1200 is probably a fair price for a used 29-5 with a 6" barrel, but everything changes if you are talking about a 29-5 "Classic" 5" barrel version...this version is bringing much larger $ amounts at recent completed GunBroker auctions:

GunBroker # 931351635 $3225

GunBroker # 929414773 $3294

I guess it just depends on which one you want...

Thank you all for taking the time for giving me your feed back. I really appreciate it!

I used to own maybe around 20 or even 30 N frames across 28, 58, 57, 629, 657 etc etc from late 1960s to 1996.

Due to Arthritis I reduced heavily and today I have only 2 that I could not make my self sell and prob never ever will.

29-5 6'' no underlug and 29-6 5'' classic full underlug.

If this tells you something.

I know it is tough without a picture. The grips appear to be original (target grips) and I would say the finish is about 95%.

Probably my most used .44 mag. The "non-Classic" 29-5 has a standard rear sight assembly (at least the "Hostiles" one does). Joe

When everything is said and done, both of these guns net out at about 3500.00 when you put shipping and sales tax on it. They were described as both being ultra rare, because of the 5" barrel.
The real ultra rare is the 29-5 Classic DX 5" as shown below. These came with 5 interchangeable front sights, a factory test target, one piece rubber grips, and a set of Morado combat grips. Near as I have been able to determine, there were +/-200 of these made. I looked at this one in a case for over a year. Finally, I bought it. Got tired of looking at it and thinking about it. Right now it has Culina American Holly grips on it

Hi Pete...your 29-5 Classic DX 5" with the Culina American Holly grips is simply STUNNING...a beautiful revolver with a set of Culina "masterpiece" grips...Thanks for sharing...Roger

Well, maybe I was a little impatient but I took the leap and got this:

Gunbroker item 933535292.

Did I do ok? Or should I have passed?

Not that I can do anything about it, but just curious.

Looks good to me...

I think you did OK WMD...looks like a nice 29 to me and the price is close to the $1200 I suggested above even though that does not include fees and shipping...hope you enjoy it...Roger

Thank you very much! I really appreciate your feed back. I am sure it was not a bargain, but as long as it was fair. Fair is fair. I can live with fair, just so long as I was not too impulsive and pay way too much....
