Is there no love for the 625 45acp?

I’m assuming these are “flying ashtrays”. My dad passed away thirty years ago and I inherited all of his supplies, press and several guns. I was going through some of the supplies last year and found an unopened box of Speer 45 cal hollow points. Thinking they’d be pretty nasty as a defensive round I loaded a a couple dozen rounds. I’ve had them 30 years and figure he had them at least 10 years. I think it was early 80’s since he had a 45 so they have to be 40+ years old.

If those have been kept stored High N' Dry they are just as use-able as the day they were loaded/reloaded/manufactured!

I have some 1968' steel core pills in 9mm that I carry when driving into the notoriously dirty down-town-Atlanta street/areas for their attributes and performance punching thru auto-glass and sheet metal!

When shooting Bin Laden, always shoot above or below the suicide vest.

Hahahaha! I always train to aim at the navel and/or the Pelvis Girdle... Such a show stopper when popped there by a .38Special, .45ACP... or even a .22LR with just a couple 32grain CCI "Stinger's" even... "So I hear anyways...":)

Probably the only gun I regret selling in over 50 years of shooting.

Back in the early 90s I bought one for USPSA matches and ICORE. My ICORE number is AZ-45 because that's what I shot at the first IRC and became the first member of the organization other then the Higashi family.

Loved the gun and had fun doing a lot of upgrades over the years. Charlie Prest did most of the work when he wasn't busy and wanted to do something instead of sitting around drinking coffee and eating donuts I'd bring him every day. I learned a lot from Charlie.

After the 8 shots became available I had to sell one gun to buy another and someone at an Arizona Rocks match asked me to sell it to him. I regretted it the next day but no way was he going to sell it back to me.

Had a coil spring conversion, chamfered cylinders, gold bead front sight, 7 pound DA pull which was a light as you could get them back then and a compensator that Charlie made and designed. This gun could shoot.

My reloads were the best I ever had. Accuracy was great and for SCSA matches, I'd shoot with the autos and we'd bet $.25 for every miss so I learned to shoot with speed and accuracy.

If I find one now I may just have to pick it up. I still have 20 moons loaded up in my old shooting bag.

Am pretty sure Speer sold the flying ashtray bullets at least into the year 2000 (although maybe only old stock on dealers shelves). Attached is a link to a more recent gelatin test. Believe they stopped production because not all 45's would feed the short COL with the huge hollow point.

45 ACP revolvers are awesome, but addictive

The 45 ACP is side by side with the 45 Colt S&W for field use but falls behind for fast reloads and variety of factory ammo. If you want a hotter self defense or hunting load, use 45 Super. No recoil springs to change like a semiauto pistol. I started with Model 25 6.5 inch for deer hunting and paper punching. I even used it for IPSC pistol competition. Following this, I have a 1988 under barrel lug 5 inch, a Custom Shop 5.5 inch, a Springfield Armory 4 inch commerative and a Model 22 4 inch Thunder Ranch. Mostly I use full moon clips, flawless ejection and fluid reloading.

A True Blessing

I got this for the price of a $25 fundraiser ticket. Several years ago I joined the forum to find out what I had. Up until that time, I never even thought much about it. Now I wouldn't part with it, it's a keeper. If it's one thing I've learned from this forum, it's a nice addiction to have.

I have 3 Fifty Round boxes of Speer's 200gr flying ashtray's in my stash I'm pretty sure of. I'll go check in a bit but I bought them 2016 and they are new production...

I also bought 3 Vintage Twenty-Five Round boxes of Winchester's 200gr Silver-Tips as well...

Both are Stellar loads! Underwood's 200gr Full-Hard Cast Wad-Cutters are I believe the deadliest of the bunch I have though... I even put those up against Underwood's 255gr Keith's as far as destructiveness on pelt, sinew, bone, and tissue... Their Meplate and construction/velocity makes them devastating upon impact with such...

Owned a 5" model 625 several years ago, and seldom shot it. I think I paid around $650 for it at the time . Not they're double that for a decent one. I had taken it to a gun show and worked a deal with a seller there for a model 28-3 . Still have the 28, but kicking myself for letting the 625 go. Just one of a few regrets over the years, lol .
