A red dot on a S&W 686 :
Hello Everyone ! A week ago I purchased my first S&W 686-6 ! And because I am used to shooting with red-dots I wanted to adapt a Chromed RMSc footprint red dot on the revolver.
In searching on the Web I found out that different brands such as Allchin, EGW, Jpoint, Raptor Engineering and Leupold were making adapters.
After thinking a little bit about what I need, I have decided to turn myself to low profile adapters such as the ones made by
Jpoint JPA-SWR :
Leupold DELTAPOINT PRO MOUNT, S&W CLASSIC:
Raptor Engineering :
This photo is from this thread : Red dotting a S&W K/L/N/X frame
The ones that has attracted my interest the most are the Raptor Engineering manufactured. They seem to have a lower profile than the Allchin ones. Unfortunately it seems on their website that their plant closed due to fire in the region in 2020. Do you know if there is still a way to buy some Raptor adapters ? Or if some members are selling these parts sometimes ? Btw are they even RMSc adapters ? From this company I only saw some Docter footprint compatible adapter on the web ...
Otherwise do you have some feedback on the Jpoint and Leupold low profile adapters ?
What about EGW ? Are they Low Profile ? Are they long enough to cover the screw holes over the revolver when the original iron sight is removed (I’m a bit scared that It would look bizarre if it left a long rectangular hole on the top of the revolver …)?
Thank you very much for your answers,
Take care,
Nico.

I'm a big fan of red dots. Most of my shooters have optics with a few exceptions.
The Raptor mount when we could get them are great. I don't know if they can be found on ebay or maybe a WTB ad. I'm sure someone is selling one they aren't using.
Below are my 686's. Raptor mounts and Nikon.

I have used Raptor and Allchin, and I think the Raptor sits the lowest profile. Have mounted on a 986 and a 617-6 with Burris FF2 and FF3 and have zero problems.
On the 986
On the 617-6
The Allchin i son the 617 and the Raptor is on the 986.

Red Dots
Here is 20+ years of red dots on 617s, 625s, 29, 657, &686s and the one on the bottom, a 610, which has the Allchin mount and a Burris FF3. I like the set up on the 610 the best.

Thank you very much guys for your answers and these amazing pictures !
As I can see and according to H Richard in fact the Raptor adapters seem to have the lowest profile.
But in doing further research, I found pictures of the Jpoint adapter mounted on a gun. And It really seems to be a great concurrent to the Raptor in terms of profile.
These pictures come from a British Gun store : Firingsolutions.co.uk
I wanted to see if there is a Chromed version of this adapter made by Jpoint, and I found this picture of their website, without finding the product tho :
So I emailed them but received an answer that they can’t offer any adapter without any finish because they make these in batches … Bizarre …I guess that I will have to buy one and remove the finish by myself … Or simply get a Raptor on a WTB forum …
What a dilemma ...
EDIT : Btw about your Raptor mounts guys are they all in RMR ? After checking the footprints of these beauties (except the Nikon where I found no information about its footprint) they all seem to be RMR and not RMS/RMSc... I'm not sure now that Raptors would be compatible with the red dot that I want ...

I'm not sure if a rmr will fit, but vortex Venoms and burris FF3 are another option. And those do fit on the Raptors.
Although I do not use them on my 686's. I have a Vortex Venom on my 629 44 magnum and 929 9mm. Those have 3moa dots and can handle heavy magnum loads.
The allchin mount seems like it's more accepting other models? It's a tad bit taller than the Raptor, but looks about the same.
The Nikon P tactical spur had its own mounts made by Raptor engineering and weren't interchangeable with the vortex Venom mounts. The Nikon is a bit wider. So, the mount for the regular Raptor wouldn't work. I never tried the Allchin mounts for them. But I don't think they'll work.
Pictured below. One of my Raptor/ Venom guns. And a comparison picture of an Allchin mount and a Raptor, side by side.

Thank your very much for this comparaison between the two mounts Lou !
Getting a RMR Red Dot could have been a solution, but I really want to get a full chromed combo with the gun and the red dot.
In fact the only one red dot I found chromed is the Vector Optics Frenzy S :
… and it has a RMSc like footprint.
Until I find a RMR Chromed Red Dot, I will keep this solution and de-anodized a Jpoint Mount … I’ll post an update with pictures when the work will be done !
Thank you very much your answers guys !
If other folks want to share their red dot experience on S&W, feel free to post pictures of it !

I can't wrap my head around red dots on handguns but I like them on modern sporting rifles.

Yeah I can understand, many of my friends have the same opinion on red dots on handguns, even if some of them let themselves convinced and are bit by bit buying red dots for their pistols !
I personally use red dots everywhere, I really think that it’s the option that gives me the best ratio between target acquisition speed and precision.

I have an Allchin on a 625 JM. Works just fine for me. The height difference shouldn't be a huge consideration at 50 yds, or even 25 yds. You can dial it in.
