Model 29-2 with an "S" serial number?
Can anyone tell me about a Model 29-2 with a S 3267XX serial number?
I thought the model 29's were using N serial numbers up until they went with the alpha numeric serials in 1983 with the 29-3's. If anyone has the S&W book and is willing to look up the ship date for me, I would appreciate it. Just message me for full SN. Lastly, are the 29-2's worth significantly more than the later variants like the 29-3's or 29-5's?

The 29 - 2 model and earlier are worth significantly more because they are barrel pined and cylinder chambers recessed.

29-2 came about in late ‘61-‘62. They had S serial numbers in the 21xxxx at that time. N serial numbers were put in place after the 1968 gun control laws. The last S numbers were in the 33xxxx range in ‘69. So most likely that 29-2 shipped in 1969.

I don't have my books with me but your 29-2 must have been very late in the S range, I have S299xxx which I show as 1968 which was the timeframe for going to the N prefix. I have a note which says S300,000 was the end of the diamond targets for the 29-2; does yours have diamond targets stocks? Is yours a 6.5 inch barrel?

29-2 had an extremely long production run, so there are a lot of them. In general, all things being equal, the earlier the gun, the more it will bring. Yours likely shipped in late '68- early '69, though someone will probably be along with a closer estimate. The only sure way to date S&Ws is with a letter, as they didn't always ship in serial number order.
I have a 6.5" 29-2 with S3182xx, which is about the same timeframe...

**Rodan posted while I was still putting my reply together, he nailed it**
From the Standard Catalog the 29-2 was introduced in 1962 with the “S” prefix which ran until 1969 when the “N” started.
Also according to the book your serial number is from the ‘68-‘69 time frame.
You should reach out to Doc44-the real expert on this revolver. Are those Roper grips?

Has custom grips, so no idea of original grips. It is a 4 inch barrel.

I haven't taken the grips off to see, but suspect they are Culina's. This gun is part of an estate collection and the decedent bought most of his wood grips from them.

Cool gun and stocks. At that time it almost certainly had "football" cutout, non-diamond Target stocks from the factory.

This is my S-prefix 6.5". Dates to 1964. I've been her caretaker for a couple of years now. Previous owner had her tucked away for over 30 years, having purchased from first owner. Original owners name is inside of grips. Still only "factory-fired". The interior case Styrofoam deteriorated from age & glue. Resides here now ,,,
The 29-2's were manufactured over 20 years. In both "S" & "N" ranges with a couple of different grips, barrel lengths and types of presentation cases.

Finally found a moment to take grips off and you were right. They are Keith Brown Ropers. Thanks for the heads up.
