Would you rather....
After purchasing my second 3" model 66 and seeing a few threads on the 3" model 65 it got me thinking about picking one up.
I don't CCW any of my revolvers. It would only serve to fuel my addiction of 3" revolvers. Most of which are 3" N frame 44 magnums. I have a few "must haves" on my want list and another 3" K frame isn't at the front of the line right now.
Out of curiosity, given the choice between a 3" model 66 or a 3" model 65, which would you choose to own?

The 66 for me too , I would not want a 357 that did not have adjustable sights.

Since I have neither, I'd want a 66. If I had a 66 already, it would depend on the condition/price of both. JMO.

66 here.
I had a 4" long ago and let it get away. I told myself I really wanted a 19 anyway. I have a 3" 13-2 that I love, but any Combat Magnum is better than no Combat Magnum!

The 3" 66, without question. Less of them around, for one thing. But I would grab the 65 if it's the only one of the two that's available.

Whichever I could buy low enough and sell high enough to get a 6-inch barreled revolver.

I own both along with a model 13. Of the three I would prefer to carry the 65 and 13. The 66 and 13 have never left the safe

Since I reload anyway and you have two 66s,I’d get the 65 and work up a load that shoots to the sights.
Fixed sight guns are cool!

I'm not really interested presently in a 66 or a 65 but I have to admit that I love fixed sight revolvers. I always liked them, I have had quite a few Model 10s and some J frames, but after spending years shooting fixed sight Ruger Vaqueros in Cowboy Action games I find shooting Model 10s to be way up there on my enjoyment list. I shot my first perfect score on a Texas CHL test with a 4" Model 10. So, if I had to choose - Model 65......

I also own both models. While you really cannot go wrong with either, I much prefer the very unique look and feel of the 3” 65 (or 13) heavy barrel. I collect mostly 3” K and L frames. No other 3” Smith has that barrel thickness as the 65. It makes the gun balance like a dream while shooting.
Keep in mind I’m talking about the barrel thickness of the regular models 65. The 65-5 LadySmith barrel appears to be the same thickness as the 3” 66.

Just read 686PC’s comments about nothing balancing quite like the 3” model 65 and got to thinking. I have a 66-3 3” and the above 65-1 with a chopped 66 barrel on it and the both weigh 1066 grams. I also have a 4” 13-3 and it weighs 977 grams. All three are great to shoot. Can’t wait to get my hands on a 3” 13 or 65 to see how they are.

I've had both since the mid-1980s.
I'd go with another 66 as only about 5500 were built;-2 (5000),-3,-4s small runs.IMHO the 3" 66 K-Frame has the same great lines and look as the 3 1/2" 27 N-frame....only smaller which aids in carrying one concealed.
Either is a great concealed Carry revolver. For me +P .38s hollow points in urban areas ..158 soft points out in Penn's Woods.
Mine wear Spegel Checkered Boot Grips.

My current 3" model 66 wears the checkered round butt targets that came standard on the 547. I have a set of Spegel Cocobolo Combat grips and two sets of smooth round butt targets, one Goncolo Alves and one Rosewood. Still trying to decide which set to use. It's not a bad problem to have.

Model 66 here as well. I don't have a 3" 66 yet so that would be my first choice.

I would go with the 66 every time. I was issued a fixed sight S&W in the academy, and later had the use of a 3" 13 for a few months. I just shoot the adjustable sighted guns better.....YMMV

The 3" 66 was my grail revolver at the time I bought it.
I have a 3" 65 too.
As far as looks I like the 65-5 best. Mine was a Lady Smith, but I removed the LS and polished it.
