Those are Davis grips from way back when.

Yes they are, and I have 6 set's 4 of which are still new and they are by far my favorite for competition shooting.
My first set from Bill Davis himself at the masters international handgun championships in Barry Illinois in 1989. And then I bought the rest from his wife just a couple years ago.

I bought this one eight years ago with some incorrect and ugly target stocks. I then bought these targets for it, which lack a lot of figure but have perfect bookending, and started looking for the Bill Davis grips which I was told are hard to find and very pricey when you did. I eventually bought a like-new set on eBay for $18!

I think the five-inch barrel offers the best combination of sight radius and overall balance of all the L-frame barrel lengths.

I really like this revolver. 👍
Too bad there is only 500 floating around, that makes it rare and pricey I would think.

The 5" barrel & unfluted cylinder was replicated in 2010 when TALO had S&W build the 3-5-7 Magnum Series for them.

Hardware wise it's the same, just lacks the Commemorative markings.

I looked for one of the Bill Davis guns for years.... no joy... :(

Had to make my own 5" M686, a very handy barrel length in my opinion.

Using a M686-4 donor gun and one of the later 5" barrels from the Talo models, this came together exactly how I hoped it would.

Just for context, I'm posting a couple photos of Bill Davis custom PPC revolvers. He was a premier builder of these. They were superbly crafted for the sole purpose of winning competitions and leaving the shooter no excuse. Thus it's not surprising that S&W might collaborate with him on a special target edition of the 686.
